The conversation took a hard left, I had no idea where Galen was steering it, and it didn’t look like it was getting back on track any time soon.

“I knew. Of course, I knew.”

Aunt Sylvia’s eyes flashed a familiar shade of red; her wolf zeroing in on me like a frightened rabbit when I gasped. She squinted her lids shut and shook her head, forcing the beast within her to settle down.

“But I hoped it skipped a generation. It has been known to happen. My parents, your grandparents, they belonged to the demon clan but their eyes never changed. And with you only being half demon wolf, I thought it even less likely you’d inherit the trait.”

“So you thought it was better for me to just figure it out on my own?” I stood up and closed the distance between us. “What is the point of family if all they do is lie to you?”

“Whatever you’re looking for, it needs to stop here.” Aunt Sylvia gripped my shoulders, her fingernails digging into my arms.

“Galen and I came here looking for a way to stop the demons attacking our town and to find out how I’m connected to them.”

“I’m so sorry, Talia. There’s nothing I can do about the mark. I don’t even think the alpha could help you. She tightened her grip on my arms, her nails piercing my skin through my thin cotton shirt. “If the demons are attacking, it’s already too late. For all of us.”

“What alpha?” Galen pulled her off me and gave her a gentle shake to snap her out of her hysteria. “Sylvia, what alpha?”

Galen knew most of the alphas in North America on a first name basis. If there was even a remote chance that he could help us, we had to take it.

Otherwise, my aunt was right and it would be too late.

Chapter Eight

GALEN

Talia’s aunt knew about the hereditary condition the whole time. She hid away from the world on her homestead in Kansas and hoped that the demon problems that plagued the rest of the packs wouldn’t land on her doorstep.

But they had - the moment her niece arrived.

I pressed her for more information on the demon clans and where we could find them. If the alpha was our last shot at stopping the attacks and finding a way to remove Talia’s mark, we had to try.

Once I had the information I needed, Talia and I hit the road again. This time headed north on the AlCan across the Canadian border and then west to Alaska. Three thousand five hundred and twenty-four miles stretched between us and our destination.

But who’s counting anyway?

Me, that’s who. It was a race against the clock and with three days of nonstop driving ahead of us, time was not on our side.
