My teeth and nails tore into flesh until there the fight left his body and his face was unrecognizable.

I collapsed on top of him, my body heaving, tongue lolled to one side of my mouth as I panted. Black spots danced along my vision. Exhaustion and blood loss threatened to pull me under, but I forced my eyes open and crawled on my belly to Talia’s cage.

My body began to heal itself. Muscles and skin knit together and the bleeding stopped. But I was in no condition to shift back.

I couldn’t manipulate the lock on her cage in my wolf form. She was still trapped. I needed more time, but time was something that we didn’t have.

The door opened and three more guards rushed in. One of them opened fire and hit me with a tranquilizer dart in my hind leg. Two men grabbed me by the scruff of my neck and dragged me away from Talia’s cage, while the third man grabbed her by the ankle and yanked her out of the crate.

Her screams as she was being hauled away were the last thing I heard before my world went black.

Chapter Fifteen

TALIA

My head spun like a top. I pressed my palms against my temples to slow pounding drums. I nestled into the soft down pillows and duvet, pulling the covers over my eyes to block the assaulting light blaring in from the large window with its curtains drawn on the opposite side of the room.

Pillows, blankets?Neither comfort had been afforded to me or Galen before.

The headache rolling through my skull like a runaway freight train, made it difficult to concentrate, but I slugged my way through processing my situation.

I battled the nausea roiling my stomach and sat up, taking in my surroundings. I’d been moved from the kennel into a posh bedroom with no recollection of it happening.

The cotton mouth and unquenchable thirst, combined with my other symptoms confirmed my suspicion that I’d been drugged.

The last thing I remembered watching Galen fight for his life and my freedom against two guards in the kennel. He’d been stabbed, almost gutted and lost so much blood.

Too much blood.

He crawled to me and collapsed in front of my cage. His coat was matted, eyes half lidded and his breathing was shallow.

Fear and pain like I’d never experience gripped my heart. They killed him. My mate, the man and wolf I’d pledged my life to was gone.

I ripped back the covers and climbed out of the four poster bed, collapsing under my own body weight. The drugs were still in my system. I needed to shift to remove the sedatives from my system and called to my wolf.

She didn’t answer.
