“You stopped the fight.” Galen clasped his hand around my wrist and brought my hand to his mouth, pressing a kiss against my palm. “I lost the challenge and now I’ve lost you too.”
“No, Galen. Shhh.” I kissed the corner of his mouth where the swelling had started to go down. “You haven’t lost me.”
“I have, Talia.” He eased me back with a gentle push. “My eyes may have been swollen shut, but my ears were working just fine. I heard what you said to Bjorn.”
“I didn’t have a choice, Galen. You could have died. I couldn’t sit by and watch it happen.”
I felt an argument brewing and didn’t know how to stop it.
“I’m an alpha, Talia.” He tucked his arms against his side and propped himself up on his elbows. “You can’t interfere every time I’m challenged. Not that it matters. You belong to the Bone Clan and a demon wolf god now. Kind of hard to compete with that.”
“It was never a competition.” I closed my eyes, pinched the bridge of my nose, reminded myself it was the tranq talking and let out a deep breath. “I have an idea.”
“An idea?” Galen raised his voice to a near shout. “What a kind of-”
“Shush, before Valerie, aka my shadow, comes barging in here. She’s probably out in the hall eavesdropping as it is.”
I crossed the room, pressed my ear to the door and pulled in a deep breath but found no trace of her.
“You need to shift.”
Part of me considered telling Galen while he was still loopy and less likely to talk me out of my crazy plan.
The rest of me knew that if I wanted my crazy plan to work I needed Galen at his best.
And at my side.
Chapter Eighteen
GALEN
Talia was there, in the room with me and within arms length, but I couldn’t bring myself to reach out and grab her, hold her close the way I wanted to. I hated that she saw me that way, broken and weak.
I wasn’t the alpha she needed.
But she refused to believe that. She loved me. I’d been beaten, broken, but none of that mattered to her and I found myself falling deeper in love with her than ever before.
