“I’m...It’s alright...Just clumsy, I guess.” I stammered my way through an explanation for the crash of cosmetics that roused Galen from his sleep and tried not to do the same with his suspicion. “I was just going to take a bath.”

“A bath, huh?” Galen’s voice was closer, just outside the door. “Just a layer of bubbles between me and your naked body?”

Galen turned the doorknob, jiggling it when he discovered it was locked. “The door’s locked.”

“He’s defiled you for the last time. The master claimed you. You belong to him now.” Darius wrapped his arm around my waist and moved the hand with the knife to my neck, the blade pressed just below my jaw.

“Talia, let me in. The door’s locked.” He jiggled it harder, and pounded his fist against the door. “Who’s in there with you? I heard someone.”

Galen pulled in a deep breath of air and smashed his fist against the door.

“I know that voice, that scent.” Galen ripped the doorknob out of the door, knocking it off its hinges. “Darius. You bastard.”

“My master has waited long enough.” Darius increased pressure on the knife, driving the blade deeper into my neck, sending a trickle of blood down to my clavicle. “Don’t move.”

“I never trusted you. There was just something about you, too eager, too opportunistic.” Galen stilled, his body unmoving, but I could see the wheels turning inside his mind.

He was studying Darius, searching for a weakness before making his move.

“I know. Your father’s death was supposed to distract you, throw you off your game, but it just pulled you and Talia closer together.” Darius partially shifted his hand and dug his nails into my side. “Don’t even think about it. I’ll gut her where she stands.”

“And risk hurting her? What will your master say?” Galen raised his hands in a placating gesture and tried to buy some time.

“He’ll heal her.” Darius pierced my side to prove his point.

“What do you want, Darius? Is there something I have that you want, something worth trading for Talia?” Galen tried bargaining with him, but it was useless.

He already had what he came for.

“No, I just like watching you squirm.” Darius stepped back, pulling me with him. “My master is so looking forward to meeting his bride.”

A shadow opened up behind us. Darius leaned back into the void, taking me with him. Galen’s screams followed me into the darkness and echoed in my ears.

Darius ruined my plan in a move I hadn’t seen coming. Any hope of escape I had was gone.

I was about to meet the demon wolf god - my future husband.
