Jamie let out a short, mirthless laugh. “You’d have to fight me to get to him first.”

“Well, in that case, I’ll step back and help you bury the body when you’re done.”

He actually laughed at that, lifting his head to smile at Chris, who had his chin resting lightly on Jamie’s shoulder. “There’s something else I wanted to tell you.”

“What’s that?”

“I love you.”

He’d been wanting to say that for a while, and when Chris’s face lit up with the most beautiful smile Jamie had ever seen, he felt like he was going to melt. Jamie gave him a small smile, suddenly incredibly bashful.

“I love you, too,” Chris murmured, his hand tenderly cupping Jamie’s face.

When Chris kissed him, Jamie really did melt, slowly sinking forward into Chris’s chest, ignoring the pain in his side as he wrapped his arms around Chris’s neck. It was slow and sweet, Chris’s hands in his hair as his tongue pressed against his. Warmth spread through him, radiating from his chest and Jamie couldn’t suppress the laugh that bubbled up against Chris’s lips.

“Is this really happening?” Jamie whispered happily.

“Yeah, I think it is.”

Jamie kissed him again. “Do you think Aunt Helen would mind if we didn’t come out for dinner?”

“Probably not. Does the White House do room service?”

“Oh, yes,” Jamie murmured against Chris’s lips.

“Then how about we get naked and snuggle?”

“You know what, Chris,” Jamie sighed blissfully, “you always know the right thing to say.”

Chapter 22

Chris woke up happy. He didn’t even have to open his eyes to know that he was already happy, but the moment he did, the feeling increased tenfold, because Jamie’s head was on the pillow next to his, blue eyes soft in the murky light of dawn, and smiling.

“Hi,” Chris whispered.

“Hi,” Jamie murmured back.

They had spent their first full night together since before Jamie’s birthday and it had been perfect. They had slowly undressed each other, Chris being careful to ease Jamie out of his sweater and shirt, placing gentle kisses on the skin of his left side, which was showing the deep purple of bruises over the fractured bones every time Jamie winced or hissed in discomfort.

Jamie was comfortable on his right side and so they lay facing each other, feet tangled together, fingers tracing patterns on skin as they kissed. Oh, and they kissed for hours, soft and unhurried, occasionally sucking or biting delicately at a lip or a tongue before continuing, fingers entangling in hair or stroking over firm, toned shoulders.

They ordered pizza, which was left outside of the door by Aunt Helen for them to pick up at their leisure, and they ate it in bed whilst watchingM*A*S*Hre-runs. Boomer came back from a long walk with a staffer and curled up at the bottom of the bed for a couple of hours, asking to be let out once Chris and Jamie started kissing again. Chris felt a little sorry for the dog, but not sorry enough that he’d stop putting his mouth on every inch of Jamie that he could get to.

Waking up to him was the most amazing feeling and Chris shuffled closer to Jamie, closing the small gap of bed between them and sliding his hand over Jamie’s left hip, leaning forward to lazily kiss him. Jamie gave a low groan deep in his chest as his tongue prised open Chris’s mouth and licked inside with long, languid strokes that made Chris inhale sharply. Jamie’s uninjured hand found its way into the short hair on Chris’s head and tugged him closer, breathing sharply through his nose as their kiss quickly deepened.

Chris’s belly started to tighten, his cock rapidly hardened, and he had completely forgotten about Jamie’s ribs until his hand moved up his back to tug him closer.

Jamie hissed immediately. “Ah…shit, that hurts,” he gasped, mouth breaking away from Chris’s as he rolled onto his back, covering his face with the arm clad in the plaster cast.

“Fuck, I’m sorry,” Chris replied guiltily. “I got a little carried away.”

Jamie laughed painfully, small huffs punctuated with more gasps. “My fault—I kinda set the pace.” He slid his arm over his head and looked at Chris with a small, apologetic smile. “Does this mean no sex for, like, a month? Because I’m not sure I can deal with that.”

Chris laughed and curled up around Jamie’s right side, rubbing his belly in small circles. “What? Is slow kissing and gentle heavy petting not good enough for you?”

Jamie grinned at him, covering Chris’s hand with his own. “There’s only so much of that I can take before it’s just not enough anymore. Especially not around you!”

Chris grinned back and put his head in the space between Jamie’s shoulder and chest, listening to his breathing, which was slightly labored. He had to admit, if Jamie’s ribs hadn’t been hurting, Chris would have been absolutely ready to pull his boyfriend on top of him.
