Kara was already wearing gloves, so she stepped forward. Looked at what was inside the box, then smiled.

This was it. This was what they needed to nail Damon Avila: Neil’s notes, files, and documents.

She called out, “Michael, I found the smoking gun!”

She squatted, picked up the box, stood. It was on the heavy side, so she adjusted it in her arms as she turned around.

That’s when she heard a faint click. Not so much a click, but a piece of metal sliding.

She froze.

“Kara, you need help?” Michael walked into the room. “What’s wrong?”

She must have looked as terrified as she felt.

“This box I just picked up is rigged.”

“Don’t move.”

She couldn’t if she wanted to.

“I’m going to get you out of this, Kara.”

“I’m holding you to that,” she said. “Or I’m fucking going to haunt you.”

Michael walked away, leaving her there. Maybe he knew this was a lost cause. It was only a matter of time before she went boom, and he didn’t want to be caught in the fireworks.

If she could move, she’d call her grandma and tell her she loved her. She called her every Sunday, or almost...but had missed this week. How could she do that? How could she forget to call her grandma, the only person on the planet who genuinely, unconditionally, loved her?

She’d been a loner for so long, even when she wasn’t alone. But Em was there for her, she loved her, and Kara didn’t do enough to tell her she appreciated it.

I’m sorry, Em. I hope you know you were the best thing that ever happened to me.

Michael called ATF. He talked to his contact, to confirm what he suspected about the bomb on theWater Lily.He didn’t know how long Kara could stand there completely immobile. Her arms could shake. Her legs might give out. She’d been white as a sheet when he walked in—fear caused people to react in a multitude of ways.

“I’m going to disarm it,” he told his contact. “I have experience, I just want to confirm with you.”

“We’ll be there in ten minutes.”

“We might not have that long. It’s a motion sensor, and my partner is holding it.”

“Got it. We’re still on our way.”

Michael called Matt while he got his bag from his trunk. As he walked back to the house, Matt answered.

“Kara found the evidence. Notes and documents in Neil’s handwriting.”

“That’s fucking fantastic! Bring it in.”

“The box is a booby trap. I’m going to get her out of it. I promise you.”

“Explain.”

“No time. Just wanted to tell you.”

“I’m on my way.” Matt hung up.

Great, Michael thought.
