“Hazel is going to be fine,” Catherine said. “She may know something so we can locate...” She didn’t continue. Three-year-olds picked up on a lot more than people sometimes thought.

“Be...careful,” Cal said. “She’s been through so much.”

Kara said, “I have an idea. Trust me.”

She approached the paramedic. “What’s your name?”

“Doug Daniels.”

“Do you know anything about the TV showPAW Patrol?”

He rolled his eyes. “I have twin five-year-olds.”

“That little girl is obsessed with them. We think she knows where her mother might be, but we don’t want to scare her.”

“Okay. I’ll do what I can.”

Doug had his bag and walked over to the car. Hazel’s eyes got all wide when she saw the paramedic uniform, but she leaned into her father, apprehensive. “Hi, Hazel, my name is Doug. I’m a friend of Marshall’s. He wanted to come out here and help you today, but he’s on the other side of the island helping another little girl. Can I put this little cuff on your arm and see how strong your heart is?”

She nodded.

Doug talked to her about everything he was doing. He took her temperature, blood pressure, checked her eyes, throat, and ears. Half of which he didn’t have to do, but it all made Hazel comfortable, and then she started talking and asking questions about his equipment and if he had ever been on the rescue boat.

“Sure thing, I love boats. Not long ago there was a family that got a leak in their boat.”

“Oh no!” Hazel said, but she didn’t sound scared. She sounded like she knew the end of the story.

“Yes! And they called search and rescue and I went out and we brought the family back to shore and towed in their boat.”

“Do you have a ’overcraft like Zuma, too?”

“It’s similar, but not the same. Do you know what that means?”

She nodded.

“Have you been on a boat?”

“Yes. I can swim with my vest.”

“You wear a vest? That’s so smart. I like boats, too.”

“My mommy’s on a boat right now! I wanted to go but she said I had to take a nap. I don’t like naps. I’m not a baby anymore.”

“You’re a big girl, Hazel.”

Doug looked over Hazel’s head at Kara and Catherine. Kara nodded at him to continue. She didn’t want too many questions coming from too many people, it might confuse Hazel, but she would take over if she needed, in order to steer the direction of the conversation.

“Do you know what kind of boat your mommy went on? Maybe we can find her, and she can ride in my ambulance, too.”

“Really? Um...well... I...” She wrinkled her face.

Kara squatted. “Hey, Hazel, did you see the boat?”

“No.” She frowned. “Mommy said I had to stay in the car.”

They’d already searched Marcy’s vehicle and Jamie’s vehicle and there were no clues as to where Jamie might be.

“So you drove someplace and then Marcy and your mommy went to the boat?” asked Kara.
