She could easily fall into the same pattern with Matt. She liked him. He was smart. He was hot. He satisfied her on many levels—not only in bed. And maybe at the beginning that’s what she was doing, putting Matt into a role that she was comfortable with, a place where Colton had been.

But Catherine’s words troubled her. If Kara and Matt continued as they were and anyone found out, the powers that be wouldn’t let them work on the same team. Kara would be the one who would have to leave, and likely for good. Matt had worked his ass off to get this position. The Mobile Response Team was his baby. Without him, it wouldn’t exist. He was developing the prototype for other mobile groups to roll out over the next few years.

That meant Kara should walk away. She wasn’t about to take from Matt what he’d spent his career creating. And if she walked away, she had nothing.

Before he opened the front door, she heard Matt behind her.

He came out wearing sweatpants and nothing else.

Her chest tightened. This might be the last time.

He handed her a beer. He had one for himself and sat next to her on the love seat. It was a tight fit, not really meant for two people. He put his right arm around the back, rested his hand on her shoulder.

“Talk to me.”

She had nothing to say.

Bullshit. You have a shitload to say, but you can’t say it.

She drank the fresh beer.

Remained silent.

So did Matt.

Kara wasn’t one to give in to an uncomfortable silence. And this wasn’t uncomfortable—hell, she wanted to take him back to bed. They had the whole house to themselves. They could walk around naked. Have sex in the shower. In the hot tub on the deck. On the kitchen counter. That almost made her smile.

“Tell me what you’re thinking.”

“Sex.”

“What were you thinking about before I walked out here?”

“I wish things were like they were before this week.”

“Now I’m confused.”

“When it was just about sex. Before I realized we can’t do this anymore.”

“It was never just about sex, Kara. Maybe that first time, back in March. But our relationship is not solely physical. You know that.”

“I’m nothing without my job.”

“You are far more than a cop.”

“I’m really not. I joined the academy when I was eighteen. And you and I both know now that if our relationship is not secret anymore, I will have to leave the team.”

He tensed next to her. “Catherine spoke to you.”

“You should have told me, Matt.”

“Catherine is not going to Tony.”

“This is your team, Matt. Your world. You’ve been wanting this for a long time.”

“What does that have to do with anything?”

“I didn’t think I wanted to be part of this. I didn’t think I fit in.”
