“I’m sorry,” she said. “It’s late.”

“It’s only ten here. It’s great to hear your voice.”

She sat down, sipped more wine, closed her eyes. She loved this man so much; she wished she were home. “It’s been a long day.”

“Tell me.”

“You don’t—”

“Yes, I do.”

So she told him everything: about the case, her concerns about Kara—and Matt’s blindness about her—the call from her mother.

“You say the word, I’ll be there.”

“I’m okay.” She paused. “I hurt Matt on purpose.”

“About Beth.”

“Yes. I need to get over this. I thought I had, but...” She couldn’t complete that thought. It made her seem shallow. Vindictive.

“Matt’s a good man, but he’s always put his career over all else. He’s a friend, and I know deep down you care about him. But a friend would also recognize that Matt and Beth were incompatible.”

“You believe that?” Her voice cracked.

“Yes. And you had to have seen it as well. Beth loved him, but she was okay when he walked out. You weren’t. You can’t continue to blame him for not loving your sister.”

“I don’t.”

She was lying.

She admitted as much.

After a long silence, she said, “How do I get past this?”

“Meet me at the memorial.”

“No. I can’t face my motherandher husband.”

“You need closure.”

“Not... Just no.”

“Is it this bombing case?”

“I’m not walking away from it.”

“I wouldn’t expect you to. But twenty-four hours to grieve would give you some peace. Lizzy and I will be there. She wants to go, and I’m not going to deny her that.”

“Protect her from my mother’s drama?”

“Sweetheart, Lizzy is the smartest eleven-year-old on the planet. She isn’t going to be swayed by rhetoric and emotion.”

“She’s still a child.”

“I would like you to come.”

“I’ll think on it.”
