“That’s not what the FBI said.”

“The FBI lies all the fucking time. You can’t believe anything a cop says.”

Ashley didn’t believe in karma or any of that stuff. How could she think that Sam had one leg or Neil had been blown up or her mother had died of cancer was because of something they did? No. They were good people who had bad things happen to them because bad things happened.

Ashley didn’t like Valerie, but she couldn’t picture Valerie setting a bomb or killing anyone. She could picture her doing other things, though. Should she have said something like that to Detective Quinn?

No. Being a bitch wasn’t a crime. She wasn’t going to rat on Valerie just because she didn’t like her or her style. But she seemed so...callous...about what happened.

“Ashley!”

She jumped. She hadn’t seen her father step out of his office, behind the kitchen.

“Dad, what’s wrong?”

He looked angry. Really, really angry.

“Did something else happen? After this morning? What’s wrong?”

He said, “Tell me the truth. Did you sneak out of the house this morning and go to the park with Bobby Martin?”

“I—” She had never lied to her dad. Well, lies of omission, but she’d never lied to his face.

He stared at her.

“Yes,” she said, her voice a squeak.

“Why would you do that?”

“I—I—”

“Are you trying to lie to me?”

“No!” Had the detective told him? “How did you find out?”

“That’s what you care about? To find out whotoldme that you’ve been sneaking out of the house in the middle of the night? To meet with a boy? Apparently everyone knows. You had your sisterlyingto protect you.”

“Whitney? I never asked her to lie.”

“Good thing, because she can’t lie to save her life, and I sure as hell don’t understand how you can.”

“I didn’t lie to you, Dad.”

“You’ve been seeing that boy for the last year and didn’t tell me. Behind my back. Sneaking out of the house.”

“I’m sorry.”

“No, you’re not. You’re sorry you were caught.”

“I love Bobby.”

“So why keep your relationship a secret? Because you know he’s bad news.”

“Bobby’s working three jobs to save up for college. He’s nice and kind and he loves me.”

“His brother vandalized a dock that could very well have hurt people, and he and his girlfriend could be behind these bombings.”

“You don’t know anything.”
