As well as I can, considering I’m obsessed with destroying him.

“We just met a couple of days ago,” I trill, with a little giggle. “It’s all been a bit of a whirlwind!”

Becca looks like she wants to roll her eyes, and why wouldn’t she? She’s the high-powered business exec, and I’m just her boss’s latest piece of arm candy. “That’s just how Sebastian operates. He doesn’t wait around for anything,” she says, like I’m a child.

“I’m beginning to see.” I reply, still sunny. “He’s quite a guy, don’t you think?”

“Yes.” Becca replies evenly.

OK, so she’s not exactly Miss Gossip, but that’s OK. I’m going to need allies for my mission, and Becca is as well placed as anyone to give me the inside scoop on Sebastian.

Whether she knows it yet or not.

“Well, I won’t keep you,” I say with a smile. “I’m sure you have a ton of important work waiting. I’m so impressed,” I add. “Sebastian clearly values your advice. And we know he doesn’t put up with any bullshit.”

That makes her look a little warmer. “No, he doesn’t. He has impeccable instincts,” she adds. “And he’s a masterful judge of character. Nobody can get one over on him.”

Is that a warning?

I pretend like I don’t even notice. “You know, we should do lunch sometime! Wouldn’t that be fun?”

“Delightful,” Becca says dryly.

“Awesome!” I clap, getting into this whole bimbo act. “Maybe I can get your number?”

She gives me a look. “I’ll have my assistant set something up.”

“Great.”

I show her out, and resolve to keep an eye on her. She was right about one thing: Sebastian doesn’t suffer fools, which means that after ten years working at Wolfe Capital, Becca must be a force to be reckoned with.

She could be a great ally for me… or a formidable enemy.

“Ma’am,” Leon’s voice comes from directly behind me, and I whirl around to see him standing there. “Mr. Wolfe has made dinner reservations. The driver will be here to get you at seven.”

It’s not an invitation, it’s an order.

“Thanks,” I tell him, only to have him leave without another word. Real friendly bunch, Sebastian has here.

So, dinner…

I think hard, wondering which sweet, demure outfit I should wear tonight.

Then I stop. I’ve been on the defensive since the night we met. Reacting tohismoves, trying to figure outhisnext step.

Overwhelmed by each new move of his subtle seduction.

It’s time I turned the tables and took back the upper hand. Tonight, I’m going to have him panting afterme.

And prove I have value beyond just a gambling prize.

AVERY

I walkinto the restaurant with my head held high—even though I’m a tangle of nerves beneath this silk of my designer dress. I can tell the place is exclusive from the subtle entryway, and the fact there’s no sign marking the entrance, just a man in uniform ready to open the door and whisk me inside the dim, clubby atmosphere.

I look around. It’s all dark leather and stylish people glittering under the chandeliers. Not my usual hangout, that’s for sure.
