I should recognize the signs. I’ve been playing a part myself for the last few days.

“He’s impatient,” I say vaguely. “So, I better get back to him. It was nice meeting you, though.”

“You too!” Lulu beams, not seeming bothered by my reply. “And thank you again, I owe you!”

I head back out to the club. It’s starting to get a little more crowded, and I weave my way through people to get back to Sebastian. I’m halfway across the room when a random guy catches my arm.

“Hello, baby.” He gives me a creepy look from head to toe. “Buy you a drink?”

“No thanks,” I say flatly, trying to sidestep him. He follows.

“Aww, c’mon. Loosen up a little, why don’t you?”

“Again, no thanks.” I glare. He just laughs, sliding an arm around me—and moving his hand to rest on my ass.

“Hard to get, I like it!”

He squeezes.

Motherfucker.

I whirl around, ready to slam his face into the nearest solid surface, and hell, maybe stamp on his puny dick for good measure, when I see a flash of movement across the room. Sebastian, heading straight for us.

And then I remember: I’m supposed to be helpless. Innocent. Not the girl who was raised in bad neighborhoods, telling assholes exactly where they could shove it.

So I just give a tiny push at the guy’s chest. Which of course, does nothing, except make him laugh. His hand stays resting on my ass—until Sebastian is at my side, faster than I would have thought possible.

Right away, the guy backs off. “Shit, Wolfe, sorry,” he stammers, taking in Sebastian’s murderous glare. “I didn’t realize she was with you.”

And otherwise, groping me would have been fair game? Lovely.

“She is.” Sebastian is icy, casually moving between us. He places a possessive arm around me. “And you are?”

“N-nobody.”

“Well, Mr. Nobody, I’m afraid your drab little life is about to get a little more interesting.” Sebastian’s voice is low, but deadly. He moves closer, looming over the guy, who’s pretty much shaking in his designer loafers. “Because you tried to take my property, so now, I’m going to take yours. Your job, your home, your pathetic excuse for self-respect. It’ll take me all of two minutes to destroy your entire world. In fact, I won’t even bother myself, I’ll have an assistant do it. And when you’re left with all that nothing, the wreckage of everything you’ve ever tried to build, I want you to ask yourself, was it worth it? To touch something that you could never hope to possess? I do hope so.”

The man gapes, terrified.

Sebastian turns back to me, as casual as he’s just caught up with an old friend. “Let’s go.”

I’msilent during the car ride back to his place, my mind racing. I’ve only spent one evening with Sebastian, but it’s told me plenty. This man is every bit as heartless and commanding as I thought, and he wields that power like a weapon. Without hesitation. Ready to undercut and destroy anyone who ever dares of crossing him.

He wasn’t concerned about me, when that guy put his hands on me. He was offended that anyone would dare try and take something that belongs to him.

Is that what happened to Miles? I wonder. Did he accidentally offend Sebastian somehow, and get embroiled in his gambling games? Or was he just a pawn in a bigger game, a way to hurt Nero, to send a message that Sebastian could destroy anyone he liked?

All the way to an early grave.

Back at the house, I can’t wait to get away from him—and fall into bed and sleep, but Sebastian stops me on the stairs.

“The night’s not over yet. Come have a nightcap with me.”

“I’m tired,” I back away.

“Yes, but I paid ten million dollars for the pleasure of your company, and I plan on enjoying it.” Sebastian regards me with a cool, unreadable smile. “One drink,” he demands.

“Fine,” I murmur, realizing I don’t have much of a choice. “One drink.”
