“We’re leaving. Get in the chopper,” he orders me.

Nope, same old Sebastian.

“You’re leaving already?” Scarlett pouts. “Stay, for dinner at least. I want to get to know Avery. And tell her embarrassing stories about you, and a certain goth phase...”

“Another time,” Sebastian cuts her off. “But I’ll see you this weekend.”

“And Avery?” Scarlett asks hopefully.

Sebastian’s jaw clenches. “Avery’s busy. Aren’t you.” His eyes bore into me.

“Sorry,” I blurt, already wondering if I’ll be in the country by the weekend, based on the subtle fury radiating from his every glance and move. “But it was lovely meeting you,” I add. “And thanks for the tea.”

Scarlett says goodbye, and Sebastian stalks back to the helicopter. I grab my things and follow, my heart pounding with dread. I glance around, seriously contemplating making a run for it. But I know I wouldn’t get far.

Sebastian would probably just chase me down himself.

There’s nothing for it. I have to face the music—and hope I can cover enough to keep him off my scent.

I climb inside the helicopter, buckling into the seat beside him. Thankfully, the moment the engine starts again, the noise is deafening. Even with a headset on, there’s no chance of talking, so we spend the trip back to London in silence, as I’m slowly consumed with a chilling sense of doom.

How can I explain this to him?

I have no idea where to even begin. And even though I should be desperately wracking my brains for a cover story for my little field trip, all I can do is replay the events of the day.

Who is the caring brother Scarlett described, the one I just saw tease and banter with her? Everything I’ve known of Sebastian so far is heartless and uncompromising. Since the day we met, he’s barely shown a glimpse of humanity. In fact, he seems to take pleasure in proving his dominance, making me weak.

Making me beg.

And before that… Well, I know his crimes. I’ve seen the damage he’s done, without a hint of remorse.

He said it himself last night: he’s a monster. Irredeemable.

I glance over at him, stone-faced beside me. It’s clear, whatever softness he shows his sister, it certainly doesn’t apply to me. He’s on a knife-edge, full of rage that’s about to be unleashed in one direction.

Me.

I shiver. I need to tread carefully, if I’m going to survive the night with my cover story intact. Because who knows how far Sebastian will go to punish the ones who wrong him?

This is not a forgiving man.

And when we land in London, and are whisked to his waiting car, I see that for myself, up close.

His phone rings as soon as we get into the backseat. He answers, impatient. “What?”

He listens for a moment, then shakes his head. “No, you must be mistaken. Becca wouldn’t be so foolish.”

I remember what I asked Nero to do, setting up a trail of embezzlement that leads right back to Becca. Clearly, his hacker works fast.

“You’re certain?” Sebastian listens for another minute, his features hardening. When he speaks, his voice is so cold that I feel a trickle of fear just from the sound of it.

“Then she’s done. Freeze her assets, cut off her access. I want an example made of her. And no, don’t file charges with the police, I’ll handle it myself,” he adds, with a chilling smile. “The law is nothing compared to the hell I’m about to rain down on that thieving bitch.”

He hangs up.

Ten years of loyalty clearly means nothing to the man; Becca is done at Wolfe Capital.

I take a deep breath. I should be happy, that’s one problem solved.
