Or did he feel the connection between us too? Something deeper than just our bodies craving release…

I find myself nervous with anticipation as I let myself in and climb the stairs to my room. I need another shower before I face him, and the defense of another demure outfit. Something pretty to remind me of the fact I’m still playing a role for him, and I can’t let my guard slip again, even for a minute. Maybe the cream dress, I muse, mentally running through my new designer wardrobe. Or the blue—

“There you are.”

I startle at the sight of Sebastian, standing like a statue in the middle of the room. “Hi!” I blurt, my pulse racing—from the surprise, and the sight of him again, after all the intimacy we shared last night.

He’s dressed for work, in a crisp shirt and well cut suit, his physique even more impressive now that I know how that body feels, pinning me to the mattress.

Then I see his face, and my heart stops in my chest.

It’s empty. Cold. As remote as I’ve ever seen him.

“It’s so nice out, I thought I’d take a run,” I continue nervously. I look around, wondering what the hell is going on. Something is very wrong here. “Did you want to grab some breakfast?”

Sebastian doesn’t say a word, he just holds out his hand to me. It’s balled in a fist, and slowly, he opens it to reveal what he’s holding.

My locket dangles from his fingertips.

The locket with Miles’ photo inside. A man I should have no way of knowing.

My blood turns to ice, fear shivering through me in an instant.

“Who the fuck are you?” Sebastian demands, his words laced with rage.

I can see the betrayal in his eyes now, and I feel an unwelcome pang. But that’s just crazy, I have no reason to feel guilty for lying to him. He’s the villain here. The monster.

And now he’s coming for me.

I back up, anxious. I need to get the hell out of here.

“Tell me!” Sebastian roars, pacing closer. “The truth, dammit. What the hell is this? What’s going on?”

I don’t reply.

Instead, I grab my bag from beside the door, and race out of the room, heading down the stairs. Sebastian powers after me, catching up just as I reach the front door.

He slams it shut, blocking my path.

Fuck.

I gather all my strength and look him in the eye. “Move,” I order him, even as I’m quaking inside. I didn’t plan for this.Fuck, why didn’t I plan for this?

Because I was foolish. I thought I could beat the monster at his own game. But looking at Sebastian now, consumed with rage and fury, I can see, I’m in way over my head.

I have no weapons. No friends. Nobody to call.

“Get out of my way,” I repeat, growing more desperate. “You can’t keep me here!”

Sebastian lets out a cruel laugh. “You want to leave? Fine.” He steps aside. “But there’s only one place you’re going. At least, until I have my answers.”

I barrel past him, outside—

And find a white medical van blocking the driveway. Three men in scrubs are waiting. They advance, approaching me.

What the hell is going on?

“She’s unstable, please be careful,” Sebastian says from behind me.
