I shake my head, fighting the grief that’s rising in my chest all over again. Sebastian was just lashing out. Trying to wound me.

I did the right thing.

I take off the engagement ring and slip it into my pocket as we arrive at the airfield. The car drives directly onto the tarmac, over to where Sebastian’s small private jet is waiting by the hanger.

The driver brings my bags up the steps and into the cabin, and I follow, looking around. It’s a small, luxuriously appointed space, with seats for ten people. But tonight, I’m the only passenger.

“Thank you, that will be all,” I tell him, and tip him generously.

“Buona notte,”he replies, and exits, leaving me alone.

I get settled into one of the comfortable reclining seats and snack on some grapes that were left out for me, hoping we can quickly get in the air. The adrenaline that has carried me through the past week is rapidly fading, leaving a bone-deep weariness in my limbs. The first thing I’ll do when I get back to London is take a bath—and then sleep for a week.

I wait a while, expecting Sebastian’s usual attendant to join me, but there’s no one around. I hear movement in the cockpit, so I call out. “Hello?”

Suddenly, there’s a clicking sound over the PA. The captain speaks, his voice muffled and crackly. “Apologies, but our usual attendant called in sick. It was such a last-minute call. But it will be a short flight, if you can manage alone.”

“Of course,” I call back. “Please, let’s just go.”

“Very well.”

The engine starts, and I buckle my seatbelt, preparing to fly. We taxi away from the terminal, and I gaze out of the window, watching the scenery go by as the plane moves down the runway, gathering speed. It’s a beautiful part of the world, and I wonder if I’ll ever return, even as I know in my heart I could never come back here.

There are too many memories of Sebastian, and everything we shared.

The plane takes off smoothly, and soon enough, we’re at cruising altitude. I stretch, yawning, and prepare to settle in for a nap, when suddenly, the door to the cockpit opens, and my pilot emerges.

Except, it’s not the pilot.

It’s Sebastian.

Terror strikes through me.

Oh God.

I look around for escape. But of course, there is none. We’re trapped together, alone at twenty thousand feet.

“Hello, Sparrow,” he drawls, eyeing me with an icy glare. “Enjoying the flight?”

“What’s going on?” I gasp.“Where’s the pilot? What did you do with him?”

“There is no pilot,” Sebastian replies. His voice is ice cold and there’s an ominous, dark look in his eyes. “It’s just me and you up here, darling, and we’re taking a little detour.”

“A detour…” I glance out of the cabin window, and see nothing but snow and mountains below us.

“To my place in the Alps.” Sebastian says, his gaze raking over me. “I thought we could use the quality time together. You see… The two of us are going to have a little chat.”

“B-but what about the police?” I blurt, my mind racing. Sebastian was a dangerous man at the best of times, but now…?

Now I have no idea what he’ll do to me.

Sebastian snorts with derision. “Did you really think they could hold me? I have the best lawyers around.”

“They just let you go?” I can’t believe it. This wasn’t the plan.

“The accident was years ago, in England,” Sebastian replies, settling into the leather seat opposite from me. “Besides, there’s no proof linking me to the crash.”

“What about the confession?” I demand.
