“How did they breathe?” Ridge asked.

“Fans hooked to car batteries circulated air from somewhere,” said Ares. “Teams are processing each of the containers now.”

Sickened, I couldn’t listen to the rest of what was said. Instead, I walked over to where Beau and Seraphina sat with Luisa.

When I approached, she looked up, and our eyes met.

“Hello,” I said, kneeling down. “I’m Press, Beau’s brother.”

“Hi,” she said, her gaze riveted on mine.

“How are you feeling? Can I get you anything?”

“There’s Ridge,” Seraphina said, standing and rushing over to him.

“I’d like to sit up,” Luisa said after her sister left.

I put my hand on her back as support.

“Thanks,” she said, turning to bend her legs so her feet touched the floor beside the cot.

“Luisa, this is the knight in shining armor I told you about, Noah Ridge,” said Seraphina, who approached with her arm through his.

Luisa shifted to get up, but Ridge knelt down and took her hand.

“Thank you,” she said to him like she had to me. When her eyes filled with tears, which quickly turned into sobs, I shifted to sit beside her, but Beau got there before I did. I couldn’t explain the feeling that came over me as I watched him gather her in his arms, other than to say I wished it had been me instead.

“Luisa,” said Seraphina, resting her hand on her sister’s knee. “Remember I told you earlier we had a place in London where we can stay until you’re well enough to return home?”

Luisa nodded.

“Do you feel ready to leave now?”

She looked up at me. “You’re going with us too, right?”

“I can if you’d like.”

She turned to Beau. “I think I’d be more comfortable, if you don’t mind coming with us.”

“Let me verify we’re no longer needed,” I said, about to walk away.

“I’ll check,” offered Beau. “You’ll get everyone to the SUV, yes?”

“Of course.”

Luisa slipped her arm through mine. “Thank you,” she said again. “My sister said we’ll be staying at your place.”

“Yes, we will,” I responded. As we walked out to the vehicle, I told her about the triplex. “Since there are three flats in total, we’ll ensure someone is with you and your sister at all times, should you need anything.”

Rather than respond with words, Luisa squeezed my arm and rested her head on my shoulder.

I’d often wondered about people who said they’d lay down their life for another. I now knew exactly how they felt. I would do anything for Luisa Reeve.Anything.

The following day,Beau and I accompanied Luisa and her sister back to the US on a plane owned by K19. Two of their contracted pilots were in the cockpit and had been instructed to make use of our landing strip at Seahorse.

“I don’t think it’s safe for Luisa or her mother to return to their apartment in San Luis Obispo,” I said to my brother partway through the flight.

“What are you thinking?”
