“So,” she said, breaking her concentration and seating herself across the counter. “The couple that has chickens, how did they go about everything?”

“What do you mean?” he asked, drying a bowl.

“Well, chickens can be a pain in the ass, and they require a lot of space. So, how did they start their ranch? How did they prepare?”

He chuckled. “It was an accident. Someone had brought a chicken over and dropped it off at their apartment. They ended up keeping it and suddenly wondered if they could run a ranch. Honestly, the chickens were easy. Joanna told me that they imported their food, and after about three years, they imported grass. They added ducks just eight months ago. They have a lot of kids that go down to see them.”

“And the gal with the goats?”

“Shyia, she runs a small ranch. She has some horses as well as goats. She teaches people how to ride along with the goat yoga. She does well for herself. Her father used to run a ranch on Earth, so she called him.”

“And the others?”

“There’s Kizu, who has cattle and other animals. I’ve spoken with him about some of my issues, and he’s stunned.” He chuckled, shaking his head. “Told me that he loves that I’m trying, but he doesn’t want any part of this.”

She smiled. “You must get along with the others.”

He shrugged. “Yeah, when everyone is trying to figure out how to make things work, we all just let everyone else know. None of us want to see the other struggle.”

His eyes cast out toward the cattle. “We all love our animals and want to make sure nothing happens to them.”

She wondered if anyone opposed the idea of what they were all doing. “Have you ever had someone going against everything that was happening? Has anyone been mad about this?”

“What do you mean?”

“Like someone that thought cows belong on Earth. That they are happier there.”

“Yeah, but I think that’s with anything. There’s been a handful, but it’s mainly tourists that wonder. They think our ranches are the same as the ones on Earth, but they aren’t.”

She knew that. She’d seen it. While ranches on Earth were cared for, it wasn’t the same. Deimos looked at his cows like they were everything.

She sighed, having nothing else she could run off of. She needed the test results before they could really start thinking about other options. Until then, they would need to sit and wait.

Deimos dried the dishes, and she sighed. She felt that bouncing energy inside her, just ready to get moving. She always preferred to be on the move than a sitting duck.

“Wait, you said that the ranchers were close, correct?”

He nodded, making himself a cup of coffee. “Yes, and?”

“How would they feel about us going and taking a walk around their places?”

He chuckled with a snort. “For what exactly?”

“Research. I’d like to see how their land is different from yours. I can take some samples and see if they have something in their soil that you don’t. Even the slightest difference could be the answer to your problem.”

“And what if they don’t feel so great about you sampling their soil?” he asked with a smirk. “I mean, I don’t see them having a problem with the idea, but let’s just say they’re peeved?”

She wasn’t one to make someone uncomfortable. Honestly, she knew that this was a step in the right direction. “I’ll just remind them that it could be anything, and if they love their animals, they wouldn’t want whatever it is finding a way onto their doorstep.”

She watched him smirk again. He started to laugh. “I don’t think they will argue with that.”

She hoped not. But if they were as friendly as Deimos said, she wouldn’t need a reason to say what she just said. None of them would want anything to happen to them, and if roles were reversed, she knew that Deimos would have lent a hand.

He took a few sips of his coffee before he nodded. “All right, let me make contact, and we can see where we are headed.”

She smiled and suddenly looked forward to it. It was like an adventure, seeing another farm and spending time with Deimos.

He left the room, and she walked outside. She watched the cows move and could tell they loved living where they were. They had land and endless water and grass. That, and she could see from the look in their eyes that they loved Deimos.
