Deimos continued kissing Hope after he had called the vet. His hands began to wander over the back of her head and to her shoulders, back, and ass. He moaned as he felt the twin globes. He lifted his head, panting harshly.

“The vet will be here within an hour and a half to two hours.” He touched Hope’s lips with his own and was immediately lost.

They kissed for a while but kept their wandering hands safely on the outside of their clothes.

Reluctantly, Hope broke their kiss.

“We’d better go look at the cows to be sure they haven’t gotten any worse.”

“Damn, you’re right. I’ll get back at you later for interrupting our love play here.” Deimos swatted Hope’s ass.

Hope giggled and ran out of Deimos’s way. Before they went to the pasture, she filed the lab report away. She let him capture her hand as they walked to the cow pasture.

“Had you ever smelled the cows’ manure before they got sick?”

“How could I not smell it?”

“Seriously. It smells different to me. I’ve been thinking about this for a while now. More … like a chemical substance and less earthy.”

As they neared the pasture, Deimos frowned, then sniffed hard.

“You’re right.”

“At first, I thought it was the native grasses and feed here. But then, I smelled manure from a healthy Earth cow, and it smelled like it’s supposed to smell … stinky.”

“Depending on what the vet says, do you think the cows can be nursed back to health?”

“I want to talk to him before I say anything. One thing … don’t slaughter any of these cows until all of the poison is out of their bodies. You don’t want to poison other Earthlings who might eat the meat from your cows. Also, do you plan to breed any of your Earth cows?”

“Damn! I’m glad you said that because I had planned to start slaughtering this herd. Breeding? Possibly. But not right now. They would miscarry their calves, as weak as they are.” Deimos and Hope continued to walk.

“Hope. Do you think it’s Tura? Or someone else?”

Hope was silent for a few minutes as they continued. “It’s a possibility. But he might have gotten someone either to help him put the substance into the cows’ water or to get their hands on whatever it is.”

“Do you remember how many shifters were talking about me at the store?”

Hope thought back. “I’m not positive. But it looked to be somewhere between ten and fifteen shifters, not including that Tura shifter.”

“Damn! That many?” This bothered Deimos and made him wonder if he truly had neglected the clutch.

Hope looked at his expression and discerned the guilt he felt.

“No, Deimos. You haven’t fallen short of your responsibilities. It sounded to me like even when things were going well, they wanted you around 24/7.”

Deimos gazed at Hope.So intuitive.

“What does24/7mean? I’ve heard that expression from other Earthlings.”

“That means doing something twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. It’s just convenient putting it that way.”

“Ah.”

There was no use staying in the pasture until the vet and his assistant arrived. After checking each of the sick cows, Deimos took Hope back to the ranch house. Then they ate lunch.

After lunch, Hope busied herself reading the lab report and looking up terms.

Deimos wandered restlessly throughout the house until he finally got fed up and sat with accounting work that had to be done. He raised his head from the figures in his spreadsheet when someone knocked on the door.
