He swallowed, slumping onto the bar. He didn’t think he could handle it anymore. He just wanted Hope.

This was for Hope. All of this is for her. This is so I can get her back and make sure that this never happens again. She is depending on me to rescue her.

He pulled his beer up and could hear someone on the phone talking in a whisper. “Tura, you should come down here.”

There was a pause.

“No, you want to get down here. He’s here, and he’s wasted.”

He looked at Qev, knowing his plan was working. It was only a matter of time before Tura arrived, and everything was going to change.

Qev gave him a nod and a reminder to stay calm. They all knew when Tura arrived, he was probably going to get a rise out of him. That’s what he was going to aim for. He needed to continue to act drunk.

He waved his beer, being sure to spill half of it. “Sir, I need another.” He turned to look at the guy at the counter. “And make sure it’s a large.”

I’m going to be here for a while.

Half an hour later, the doors swung open, and Tura stepped in. He stood tall and squared his shoulders. His eyes scanned the crowd until they landed on him. He took a swig of his beer, the first real one of the night. He was going to need it.

“Look what the wind blew in,” Tura said, walking across the tavern. “And you look like you’ve had a few.”

He swallowed.

Remain calm.

“I have,” he said, being sure to slur his words. “Great beer they have here. You should have some.”

Tura shook his head, snorting in derision. “No, unlike some people, I make sure I get my duties done during the day instead of wasting my time on dumb things.”

He clenched his teeth as Tura turned to everyone else. “Look at this. Do you call this a leader? Sitting here drinking his weight in beer when you all have real problems? An alcoholic is what you want as a leader?”

He watched Qev grind down on his teeth. Qev’s eyes flew to him, and he took a deep breath. He wanted to hurt Tura just as badly.

“Honestly, is this how low we have stooped?” Tura turned to him. “To someone like this?” Tura laughed, shaking his head. “You’re setting a really good example as a leader.”

He wanted to tell him he was one to talk. Poisoning cows, kidnapping people, and who knew what else?

But instead, he forced himself to sway in his chair. “I’m not drunk.” It was all he could say without wanting to slit the man’s throat.

“Sure, and I’m not a male.”

He pulled himself up and glared at Tura. He took a breath in through his nostrils and scowled at him. Tura smirked. “What are you going to do, Deimos? Do you want to throw a punch? I dare you. Hit me.”

He wanted to. Damn, he wanted to kill the man. But he couldn’t.

If he hurt him, he would never find Hope, and he would never be able to take him down. He needed to stay calm.

He, instead, forced himself to sway on his feet. Tura laughed, shaking his head. “You’re pathetic. You’re not even a man. You’re a coward.”

His dragon growled angrily, and he could hear others start to agree with Tura.

“He’s right.”

“Tura, take him down.”

“Hurt him.”

Tura gave everyone a smile. “I can’t hurt a man while he’s down. I’ll do it in a professional way.” He smirked. “I’ll take your position, and you will be nothing.”
