Once again, he was impressed. The girl had good instincts.

He landed on the ground a few feet from her. Her guards were up, and he examined her bright blue eyes carefully. She had an exquisite face. The lines of her jaw and cheeks were sharp enough to cut glass. Her mouth was full, and her lips were pink. Her nose was upturned at the end.

And her eyes. Her eyes were like jewels. They mesmerized him. They were as blue as the clearest oceans.

He had to shift into his human form. To show her he meant no harm. Hammer pushed aside his reluctance and let his dragon form fade away. His claws retracted, revealing hands and feet.

His thick, muscular face softened. The yellow of his dragon eyes became blue. Though flecks of gold remained. Hammer ran a hand through his blonde hair as he looked at Charlie. Now her breath was erratic. Her heart beat unsteady. She wasn’t in control anymore.

But it was clear that she wasn’t going to show fear. Not in front of him.

He marveled again at her beauty. She truly was exquisite. It was a pity that he would never see her again. Not once he got her to complete safety.

The shock on her face as he went over to his go-bag and grabbed a shirt was satisfying. He liked shocking humans. They always thought they were the masters of the universe.

But Charlie was determined to destroy all stereotypes of humans. Because after swallowing, she walked up to him. Then, tapping him on the shoulder, she cleared her throat.

His body jerked at the burn of her touch. But then he turned slowly.

She was angry, and fire flashed through her eyes.

“Who the hell are you, and why did you grab me?”

CHARLIE

“Who the hell are you, and why did you grab me?” Charlie’s voice was hot, and the words came out scratchy. What did you expect, Charlie? The voice in her head said. Her voice. You just saw a dragon turn into a man.

She remained silent, waiting for an answer. But the voice in her head kept chattering on. The voice was such a bitch.

The man, who had just been a dragon, was handsome. Though she wasn’t sure why that was the first thought on her mind.

He was tall, taller than she was. He had to be well over six feet.

And he had the most beautiful hair. Hair that fell in icy golden waves to his cheekbones. And his eyes. When he had been a dragon, his eyes had been yellow.

Now they were the brightest, most liquid blue eyes she had ever seen. But flecks of brilliant gold cut through the blue.

Charlie crossed her arms over her chest and raised a brow.

He was what her father called a shifter. Humans who could turn into animals. Bears and wolves … and dragons, it seems. Charlie had once overheard her father talking about a prison. A prison that held criminal shifters. Those who could not blend in with the human population.

“I’m still waiting for an answer.” She snapped the words out. Her face grew warm as he turned away from her again. He pulled a shirt on as she stared at his back.

When he shifted back to his human form, all he wore was what seemed to be a pair of boxers. The rest of his body was totally bare.

And his body was as perfect as his face. The muscles in his back and legs rippled as he moved. His arms were thick and muscled.

She had even seen the faint outline of his member through the boxers.

Now he pulled on a pair of cargo pants and stuck his feet into boots as he leaned against the dilapidated cabin. Then he turned to her and directed his brilliant eyes towards her. She hugged herself more tightly. He made her shiver.

Very few men had ever made her react physically. For some reason, her mind skipped back to Randy. Equal waves of rage and devastation washed over her at the memories.

But the dragon shifter was speaking. She forced herself to listen.

“I’m Hammer.” His voice was dark and husky. Charlie suppressed another tremble. “I was sent to rescue you and get you out of here.”
