“Quentin will fix the story when he recovers,” I say, finally feeling relaxed enough to unsummon the ice blade. It turns to water vapor right out of my hand. Now, I fold my arms. “What we did here isn’t going to make it to the final edit of the book.”

Kingsley pulls me close. “Wait, so this entire world changes and reshapes itself however he wants?”

Tammy and I say, “Yeah,” simultaneously.

After a moment of giving me intense side-eye, Kingsley rubs a hand down his face, groaning in frustration.

“Guess his simple dog brain can’t handle it,” says Tammy past a nonserious grin.

He smirks at her.

“I happen to love his simple dog brain.” I hug him.

“He did guess correctly.” Allison gestures at him. “He said it was Meritha.”

“Not a guess. I deduced her identity based on the facts as I saw them,” says Kingsley in a surprisingly good British accent. Probably going for some sort of Sherlock Holmes joke.

Lindsey chuckles. “You don’t know anything about this world. You guessed.”

Allie tugs on my arm. “We need to collect Damon and get out of here stat.”

“Why, is this reality going to reset or something?” asks Anthony, gazing around.

“No.” Allison blushes. “The conjured clothing is going to disappear.”

Chapter Nineteen

Realities Within Realities

I teleport us to the small courtyard in front of Demetria’s manor.

Had to land there as the inside of the house existed in a pocket dimension. My teleport powers tend not to leap across dimensional boundaries... though it’s not like I’ve tried too often. Still, I sense a hang up in this world, and that’s likely due to this being, well, made-up world, with rules created by Quinton.

We go inside only to find the layout completely different. The interior is no longer dark, gothy, and screaming ‘a vampire lives here’ at the top of its lungs. This manor now looks like a generic wealthy person’s home from the past.

Damon is in the midst of pretending to be Lord Ceomar while having tea with an older couple and their three daughters. The girls range in age from about sixteen to later twenties. It’s pretty obvious the parents are hoping he takes a fancy to one and marries them into nobility. He’s got an odd emotional energy at the moment. Feels like he really wants out of there as fast as possible, though he’s putting up with the social interaction so he doesn’t get in trouble for something.

My guess is at the moment Demetria and Nesanth got slingshotted out of this reality, the manor house that should have been here returned. Damon probably went back to ‘Demetria’s house’ to wait for us after we teleported away from the disastrous party… then this place changed around him. Good thing for him he’s a noble lord in this reality or we’d likely have been needing to get him out of prison.

The family of five stare at us walking unannounced into their home. Mostly, they stare at me since I’m up front. We’re on a ticking clock right now so I don’t care so much about subtlety, or politeness. Not even going to bother trying to come up with any sort of explanation.

“Excuse me,” I say and head over to Damon, resting a hand on his shoulder.

Seems the father of the three young ladies is having trouble handling a bunch of ‘commoners’ walking into his house and ignoring him. Dude is so aghast and offended at my ‘disrespect’ to his status, he’s unable to form coherent words. He merely makes some babbling sounds of extreme offense in the time it takes me to call the dancing flame and teleport us all back to the abandoned hut where we first appeared.

No, I don’t care the rich family saw us teleport. The ‘real’ Lord Ceomar can have fun trying to explain that one. Though, I doubt that puffed up rich guy is going to make a big deal about it. Openly accusing a noble of breaking into your house, then simply disappearing into thin air is the sort of story that gets people locked up for being insane in a world like this.

We hurry inside the hut and unbury our stuff. Alas, the problem with conjured clothing is they are not illusions. They really do exist for a limited time, so we have to take them off before putting our modern clothes back on. Ahh, it’s good to have my phone back on me again. Crazy how much I missed this little thing.

Lindsey and Damon wait outside since they don’t have their modern clothing stashed here.

Once we’re all dressed and feeling normal again, we file out of the abandoned hut and gather in the meadow nearby.

Lindsey sighs, sounding a touch sad.

“You okay?” asks Tammy.

“Yeah. Kinda tempted to stick around here longer. Having magic is fun.” Lindsey summons a little fireball in her hand, lets it wobble around a bit, then dispels it.
