“What?” he whispers to me and I shake my head.

He gives me one last long look before he turns back to the meeting.

I try to focus, too, but as I listen to the lawyers babble on and on, I start to get bored stiff. I pick up my pen, doodling on the notepad in front of me. When I notice that I have Alexander’s attention, I start to write Vegas show names in the margins.

Celine Dion?

He picks up his own pen and writes backno, underlining it three times.

Cirque du Soleil?

I’d rather die,he writes underneath and I bite back another laugh.

The Blue Man Group?

He just glares at me after that one.

I roll my eyes at him, hard, before I write one last thing.

I’ll just go by myself then.

He grabs the pen from my hand and lays it down on the table before he writes back.

No.

“You’re not the boss of me,” I whisper to him.

He shakes his head, giving me a dry look before he focuses his attention back on the lawyers. I roll my eyes at his pissy attitude and try to remember what other shows I know of. I’m sure that it will depend more on which one still has tickets available, since I’m getting them so close to showtime.

The rest of the meeting passes slowly until finally they’re signing the paperwork and shaking hands. Alexander has a confident smile on his face and I grin. I love seeing him in his element.

The man was born to run a boardroom. The black sheep of his family, which is filled with artists. His mom is a painter, his dad teaches art history at a prestigious college, his older brother, Anthony, is a comedian, and his younger brother, Ames, is a tattoo artist. And then there’s Alexander.

I asked him once if he could draw and he told me he couldn’t even manage a stick figure. We all know that he barely has a sense of humor, so comedy’s out, and he’s never been interested in history or studying art.

I asked him if he felt out of place among them and he just shrugged. Sometimes I wonder if that’s why he only sees them once a month, in spite of the fact that his parents live in the same town. His brothers are even worse. They only see each other about twice a year and talk every few months.

This is my first trip out of New York since I moved there two years ago and I’m strangely glad that I’m here with Alexander. He might be a big grump, but I know that he’ll look out for me and make sure that I stay safe.

“It’s nice to see you again, Ms. Camrie,” Mr. Gainer says as he shakes my hand.

“You too,” I tell him, giving him a genuine smile.

“How are you liking Las Vegas?” Logan asks me as he takes my hand next.

“I haven’t seen much of it yet,” I admit, trying to pull my hand from his.

“Maybe I can show you around. You’re still in town tonight, right?” he asks, stepping closer to me.

“Yeah,” I say, glancing around the room, looking for an excuse not to go out with him. “I was thinking about seeing a show tonight, actually, so I’m not sure that I’ll have much time after that.”

“Seeing a show by yourself?” he asks, giving me another charming smile.

“No, she’s going with me,” Alexander says, surprising me and everyone else in the room.

I stare at him in shock as he tugs me away from Logan and closer to his side. It feels like everyone in the room is staring at us and I can feel my cheeks flush as I shuffle next to him.

He and the lawyers finish saying their goodbyes as I struggle not to stare at Alexander. Sometimes I wonder if I’ll get whiplash from his mood swings.
