“Hello,” I whispered to him.

He said nothing, but continued staring.

He had mentioned his magic; maybe this was some version of that, and not the actual man himself.

“Can you take me to your memories?” I asked him.

He stared at me for a long moment before turning and walking down the beach.

Chapter9

I followed him, feeling my hair sway against my back as I moved. That bounce in my step was still hanging around, despite the fact that I was now in Laith’s mind.

We walked down the beach for a while, and I loved how good I felt. When I left my body behind, I must’ve left my illness behind as well.

The ocean’s shore grew rocky after a while, and I slowed down a bit. Laith slowed too, giving me time to pick my way around the massive, rough stones.

Eventually we made it past the rocks, and the beach was smooth in front of us again. Laith’s magic stopped a few minutes later, turning to stare at me.

“Are we here?” I asked him.

He only stared.

I looked around for any sign of something that might resemble memories, but found nothing.

“Can you point me toward the memories?” I asked.

He gestured toward the sand near his feet.

Oh.

Oh.

The memories were buried?

That made sense, I supposed.

My memories certainly wouldn’t have been hanging out in the open. I did everything I could to keep those fuckers away.

Sinking to my knees, I reached my hands out toward the sand. My fingers sank into the soft grains, and I dragged handfuls up toward me and my silky dress. It wasn’t the real world, so I wasn’t actually covering myself in sand. Even if I was, I didn’t really care.

The memories weren’t buried too deeply, so after a few minutes, I found myself peering down at what looked like a shimmering pool of water.

I dipped my hand in, checking if that was all it would take to see the memories.

My fingers slid into the shimmering pool, but nothing happened. It didn’t even feel like anything.

Maybe I needed to climb in.

I stood up, brushing sand off of my dress and ignoring the grains stuck to my legs.

Carefully, I lowered one foot into the pool.

It felt as if something had latched onto my ankle, and a screech escaped me as I was yanked into the puddle.

The world seemed to melt around me, until I landed on my knees in a massive room. The walls and floors were made of gleaming white stone, and there were two massive thrones at the head of the space. A man who looked like a darker-skinned version of Laith sat on one of them, glaring at me, and a woman with cruel-set eyes sat in the other. Her skin was lighter than Laith’s, but his thick, dark, and wavy hair had clearly come from her.

She was glaring at someone else, off to my side, so I turned my head.
