Damn him for being accurate.

I met his stare with my own. “They can’t see through the fabric.”

A cold breeze chose that moment to blow through the open window across the room.

Even the damned wind was agreeing with Laith.

“I have a hard time believing you’d waltz me in front of your sisters sporting a hard-on with only a bit of silk draped over it,” he drawled.

My traitorous body clenched at the idea. “Sure, that would be fine,” I lied.

His lips curved up in a smirk. “Put this on, or I not only leave you here, but I go in my underwear and nothing else.”

I scowled at him. “You wouldn’t.”

“Wouldn’t I? I have a role to play, same as you.” His gaze was wicked.

Fucking hell, maybe he really would.

“This isnotme letting you win,” I warned him, reluctantly reaching over and taking the fabric from his fingers. He’d picked one of the stretchier ones, at least.

“Of course not,” he said with his lips, though there was humor in his gaze.

Damn him.

And damn me for loving him.

Notloving him, loving him, but… okay, I needed to stop before I got too tangled up in my thoughts. Something told me that a declaration of love would put a significantly awkward gap between us, and I was having far too much fun laughing and having sex with Laith to risk that. We had claimed each other, and that was more than enough for the moment.

When I’d stepped into the sleeveless undergarment and tugged it up over my breasts, I glanced over my shoulder to check out the back.

Buttons.

Dammit.

A glance at the other undergarments, and a quick leaf through the hanging fabric, proved thatallof them had buttons.

“Seriously?” I asked Laith, turning a pointed stare at him.

He was smirking, still, undoubtedly knowing full-well what I’d realized. “Seriously what, Lemay?”

“Don’t play evil king with me,” I grumbled, turning my back to him and gesturing to the buttons. “You made sure not to get me any damned undergarments that I could put on myself. Consider yourself lucky that I haven’t called myothermate to come save the day.”

“I did no such thing.” Laith stepped up to my back, his fingers finding the buttons just above my ass. “And if there was another mate, he would be long dead, my queen. I may not be as wicked as my brothers believe, but I do know that there are some things worth killing for.”

“And I’m one of them?” My voice was quiet.

“You areallof them.”

I knew his words were playful, but Laith wouldn’t joke about that. Not given his past.

Not wanting to delve further into the darkness of those thoughts, I changed the subject. “So how are we playing this? You’re not going to come clean to your brothers, are you?”

“Of course not. We were pitted against each other for far too long for that to ever be an option. If I show them weakness, I die.” His fingers deftly made their way up the middle of my back, doing up the buttons as they went.

“I haven’t met them, so I don’t know whether or not I agree with that assessment. But they’re your brothers, so I’ll let you make the call.”

“Thank you.” His knuckles brushed slowly over the bit of my spine that was still exposed. “They’ll kill me immediately unless we give them a reason not to. You will be that reason.”
