She should not have said that in front of Laith.

My heart beat erratically, and I wrapped an arm around the one he had on my waist, holding tightly to him in case he decided to try to transport away from me and to wherever those bastards were.

“You found them?” I forced the words from my lips.

She nodded.

“Where?” Laith’s voice was a deadly growl.

I knew that tone; it was the one that had accompanied him while he murdered his father.

He couldnotfind out where they were, or my dark king would do something that would scar us both forever.

“Don’t tell him that,” I growled back at Akari. She needed to know that this was important, and that I wasn’t justasking.

She said quickly, “Espen will be back any minute. They’re done by now.”

My head jerked to the side when I heard Male laughter from the same stairwell that I’d heard the women talking in.

Laith’s magic swelled around me, so I tilted my head back and pressed my lips to his throat, just below the mate mark he’d hidden from our friends. His body relaxed, just slightly, and I straightened, waiting to meet Laith’s brothers.

His head dipped down, and his lips brushed my shoulder, though. I got the feeling he had realized he needed my comfort in the tense moments that hadn’t gone nearly as badly as they could’ve. So I leaned my head a bit, resting it against his shoulder. His lips brushed my cheek, and he murmured against my ear, “You hold far too much power over me, Lemay.”

My cheeks flushed, and I hoped he would hide my response from Akari.

“Do you feel that?” A male voice asked, somewhere out in the hallway.

“Feel what?” Another replied.

“Darkness.”

There was a moment’s pause, and then the floors warmed.

Bright light flooded the room as Espen filled the doorway for a moment, before storming into the room and standing in front of Akari. His massive form hid her from me entirely.

“Don’t,” she growled, stepping around her king and blocking his glowing palms. Her hair was still brighter than it should’ve been, but she made no move to attack us.

“What the fuck are you doing here?” Espen snarled at his brother.

“Is Laith in there?” Diora murmured from behind us.

Diora.

Fuck, I missed her.

I couldn’t help but call out to her. “Yes, and I am too.”

Espen and Akari were both shoved to the side as Diora pushed through, her eyes lighting up when she saw me.

She rushed across the room and threw her arms around me. Laith didn’t release his grip, but it did loosen enough that I could wrap my arms around her, hugging her back just as fiercely as she held me.

“What happened? Why are you here?” Diora looked from me to the man behind me, and her eyes narrowed.

Yeah, saw that one coming.

She tried to tug me away from him, but I didn’t even have to glance back at him to know he wasn’t going to let go of me. We were a pair, for better or worse.

“They’re together,” Akari told Diora. “Fated like the rest of us, I suppose.”
