Chapter12

Laith

I had never hurt so badlyin my fucking life.

Every part of me ached.

Vena’s hands were moving slowly, one of them dragging through my hair and the other over my abdomen.

When I forced my eyes open and saw her face, I stiffened.

The color in her cheeks had begun to fade already.

Her sickness was returning.

The throne’s magic provided extra strength and speed to those who possessed it. For Vena, those effects must’ve appeared in the form of her increased health.

And without it, she was going to start deteriorating.

Quickly.

Had I made the wrong decision in giving my magic to my brothers? Crossing the world with the throne’s magic would’ve made me violently ill, but better me than Vena.

Then again, it likely would’ve had the same impact on her, and could very well have killed me.

There was no good decision to be made.

To survive, we would have to suffer.

I had known that before we left the castle, but now that we were lying in bed, my body so heavy and sore that I wasn’t sure I could even get up at all, it felt much more real.

My eyes closed, but I lifted my hand to rest on Vena’s back. It was covered by the clothing I’d made her put on; the undergarment with its buttons.

“I should’ve helped you undress,” I mumbled to my female.

“You were preoccupied.” Her murmur was soft, her fingers pausing in my hair and on my abs. “And considering I never intend to wear one of these damned undergarments again, I can handle a few more hours.”

“Shouldn’t have to, though.”

Her stomach rumbled loudly, and my lips curved up slightly. “Sorry,” she sighed. “I’m fine.”

“Hungry and fine have very different definitions.” I stroked her back, almost as annoyed by the fabric as my female was. “Let’s find you something to eat.”

“You’re tired, Eiven. Rest will help. I can eat later, or back at our castle.”

Fuck, why hadn’t I thought of that?

An easy escape, safety, and plenty of food…

I reached for my magic. The dark magic Vena had been holding onto for me for so many years wasn’t necessarily new, but the consistency and strength of it wasn’t the same as the throne’s version.

It swelled around us, but didn’t take control. And it certainly didn’t connect to the rest of the darkness in my land, giving me a way to travel with ease.

Shock and discontent followed that realization.

I was…

Stuck.
