All fae had an aura about them. It wasn’t visible, but you could feel it from a good distance away. These women looked… empty.

And though they were wearing the land’s clothing, they looked foreign, somehow.

They spoke my people’s language, but their accents were of the likes that I’d never heard before, and they were speaking of things calledcarsandplanesthat I had never heard of.

My eyes were fuckingsaucerswhen I saw the two men and the little girl walking behind the women.

I had never met them before, but the power coming off of them was so intense I could see it flicking the air. Their eyes glowed, and I knew without a shadow of doubt that they were two of the kings that had wrecked our land after saving it, along with the niece who had been tied to the wind king when he was lost.

The Kings of Disaster…

They were there.

Right by us.

And not destroying anything.

They walked out of our line of sight, and I felt an urge to follow them, to see where they were going and what they were doing.

But I knew I didn’t have time for that.

Even if I did, there wasn’t a chance in hell that Laith was about to follow two ultra-powered, insane kings into their own forest when he only had half of his own magic.

So when he stood up and carried me back to the road, resuming his jog, I tilted my head against his shoulder and let my thoughts race silently.

Who were the women?

Where were they going?

How had they ended up beingfollowedby the insane kings that were known for destroying everything in their path?

Though I wondered for ages, and Laith joined in with my musing, we had no way of getting any answers.

So eventually, I let it go, and focused on what we were doing.

Finding a way to stay alive.

Chapter16

Laith

Vena faded furtheras the days passed. By the time we made it to the center of the land, about a week after landing there, she could only stay awake for an hour or two at a time.

A few people were at the bottom of the mountain that marked the center of the land when I reached it. When I growled at them, they pointed me to the path that led up to the top, though they exchanged uncertain glances before I stalked away. They could shove their uncertainties up their asses and follow me up the damn mountain if they wanted to. As long as I got Vena to where she needed to be, I didn’t give a fuck what they did or where they did it.

Climbing the mountain was harder than it should’ve been, since I had been going without much rest for so many days, but I pushed onward. My body and magic had adjusted to the loss of the throne’s power while we were on the boat, so I was fine.

As I neared the top of the mountain, I used my spare hand to rub my female’s cheek lightly.

“Lemay,”I murmured into her mind.“We’re almost there, I need you awake.”

She stirred, but her eyes were clouded and I could tell she was out of it.

Fear clenched my abdomen, and she reached down to rub her own lightly. “Are you okay?” she whispered aloud to me.

WasIokay?

This woman.
