I swallow hard. “I don’t know how you do it.”

“Do what?”

“How you manage to reach inside me and tug at my heart strings every damn time.”

He huffs a sigh. He’s just faced his worst fear—other than maybe covering himself in tarantulas. Am I really going to tell him it hasn’t worked? That he’s not going to get the girl?

I’m not going to follow through with the bet because I promised Mack, or because I don’t like to think I’m the kind of person who doesn’t hold up her end of a bargain.

I’m going to do it because the guy standing before me threw himself off a building for me, and he’s the most gorgeous man I’ve ever met, and I’m totally in love with him, and even though I know it’s madness to let myself sleep with him, I want to do it more than anything in the world.

I pull my phone out of my back pocket. “Hold on.”

“You’re choosing this moment to check your texts?”

“Keep your knickers on.” I scroll through to the app I want and check the calendar.

“I need to get my phone back off Mack,” he says. “I should call Joanna. It would be nice for her to know they’re not scraping her father off the ground with a trowel. And that I didn’t embarrass myself. Too much, anyway. Jesus. I feel like Alexander the Great—as if I could conquer the world. Maybe I should go and invade Persia.”

“Will you stop talking, just for a moment?”

“I can’t control my mouth, sorry. It’s the fear. It hasn’t quite left the building. Jesus, that platform is a long way up. I don’t remember anything about the fall except the seagulls. Did I tell you I think I screamed?”

I tuck my phone back into my pocket. “March the eighth,” I say. “It’s a Tuesday. Do you think you would be able to take the evening off?”

“Uh… yeah, probably. I’ll have to check with Victoria. I don’t think we’ve got anything big on that week. Why?”

I press my lips together for a moment. Am I really going to say this? I take a deep breath. “That’s apparently the best day for me to get pregnant. The day before I ovulate.”

His eyes widen. “Oh.”

“I have an app,” I say unnecessarily.

“Right.”

We study each other for a moment. He looks speechless. Aw. He didn’t really expect me to go through with it.

“Shall we go away somewhere for the night?” I say softly.

“Really?”

“Yeah. Where do you fancy?”

He gives me a beautiful smile. “Leave it with me. I’ll book somewhere nice.”

“Okay.” I move a bit closer to him. “I can’t believe you went through with it.”

“I really like you, you know,” he says, somewhat helplessly.

“You mean you really want to have sex with me,” I tease.

“That too.”

I laugh and lean my hands on his chest. “I’m extremely flattered.”

He rests his hands on my hips. “Then it was worth it.”

“Would you like a celebratory kiss?”
