Laramie led the way, not responding to Koby’s words. Fletch realized the truth of them, though. It explained a lot about the way Brock treated Jemma. A hell of a lot. It also made Fletch feel sorry for them. Life could be too damn short.

When they stepped outside, there were four men and two women. Fletch noted the women remained in the SUV. One of the men stepped forward to greet them as they walked out. The other three looked around. Fletch knew they were searching for something. Or someone.

“Hello, my name’s Sam. It’s nice to meet you, Alpha.” He bowed his head in respect. “My brothers-in-law Thomas, Thad, and Ryan. My wife’s in the vehicle along with Thad’s wife.”

“You’re not members of the Holloway den,” Laramie stated.

“No. I was part of the Langston den until I was ten or so. Then my family moved away. Went to Canada. I didn’t move back until I met my wife last year.”

“Your wife’s family?” Brock asked.

“Not part of your den either,” the oldest among the three brothers answered. Or at least, Fletch took him to be the oldest. Ryan, Fletch thought.

“Then why are you here?” Laramie demanded.

“We were in Washington when we heard you were searching for female shifters who might be held captive by hunters. We wanted to offer our help,” one of the other brothers offered. The one with the wife in the car. Thad.

“How did you hear about the searches?” Holt asked.

“There are a lot of people here who still have family and friends among the Langston den,” Sam said. “Word’s spread quickly there. I suspect more of us will be heading this way to help. Most are looking for a new home. With Emersyn here now, it makes sense to follow her here.”

“You know my mate?” Laramie asked.

“I did,” Sam admitted. “A long time ago when we were children.”

“Who knows me?”

The door to the main lodge opened, and Em stepped out, moving to stand by Laramie’s side. He easily slipped his arm around her, and Fletch knew the alpha was ready to move his mate out of danger if anything happened.

“I’m not sure you’ll remember me,” the other man greeted her with a smile. “Sam. I used to play with Adam, and you and Rissa were always there.”

“Sam Carson,” Em breathed. “I thought your family moved away. What brought you back?”

“My parents died a few years back. Then when I met my wife last year, she was from this area. We found her brothers and headed to Washington, but the den’s pretty much dissolved now. There’s still an alpha there, but it seems most have moved on.”

“Titus Walker,” Laramie stated. “What do you know of him?”

Sam shrugged. “He’s now alpha of the Langston den, but he seems like a nice enough guy. From what I understand, he stepped in when no one else would. He tried to do what he could after the attacks on the den. Heard he lost his two closest friends. They were like brothers to him.”

“I knew he’d lost friends,” Em admitted. “I didn’t realize how close they were.”

“He’s been focused on finding whoever’s responsible,” Thomas told them. “Many have headed this way now that they know you’re here, Em, but Titus won’t leave as long as even one shifter wishes to remain.”

Laramie and Em shared a look. That was interesting. As far as Fletch knew, that news hadn’t been shared with anyone in the Holloway den and they had quite a few members from the Langston den at this point. They’d have to start asking questions and wait for Malachi Blackstone to check in again. He’d want to talk to his daughter soon as well as check in on his sisters, Jaeda, Sidia, and Xandra. Hell, he’d sent Em along with Ruby to the Holloways because he hadn’t trusted Walker. He was still sending shifters their way. If anyone would know what was going on with Titus Walker, Malachi should.

Of course, Malachi didn’t trust Titus any more than any of them did. Malachi had lost his wife when she’d gone into labor during the attack on the Langston den. She’d died during the birth, and Em had been the one to step in a play mother to her cousin’s child. Hell, Ruby looked so much like Em that many thought she was Ruby’s biological mother. Malachi had sent Em with his daughter to find the Holloways, knowing three of his sisters were there, all mated. Two to Holloway brothers and one to Holt Reynolds. Two of them, the twins Jaeda and Sidia were both pregnant while Xandra was with Declan, Chance, and Woody on the hunt for Lawrence Walker, the elder who’d betrayed them and Titus Walker’s uncle. Fletch would be glad when the elder of the two Walkers was found and brought back for punishment.

“We can find a couple of cabins for you,” Em offered.

“How long do you plan to stay?” Laramie asked immediately.

“As long as we’re needed,” Sam vowed. “My wife was taken and held captive for years. So was Thad’s. They managed to escape. That’s when I met them. My mate begged me to bring them back to look for her family. We were able to find her brothers.”

“And I found my mate,” Thad beamed with a glance back at the SUV.

“We’ll have Matheus get some cabins ready. In the meantime, feel free to come inside,” Em offered. “Have you eaten yet?”

“We stopped down the road,” Sam offered. “My wife’s pregnant. I’d like to get her into a room as soon as I can. Our SUV is comfortable, but she could really use a bed.”
