“My life motto,” I agreed, getting a little laugh out of her before she ran off.

Taking a deep breath, I moved into the bedroom, finding Nyx on her back, the blankets up to her chin with ice packs on her face.

“Hey, babe,” I murmured, kicking out of my shoes, then climbing in on the other side of the bed.

Then it happened.

She finally let go.

Crying hard, her body racked with the sobs. She didn’t even hear Morgaine as she tiptoed in to drop off the ice packs with a sad face.

“Thanks,” I whispered as I curled around Nyx, trying not to touch any of her sore spots while still giving her the comfort of caring hands on her.

I didn’t say much, knowing she just needed to purge all the shit out of her.

Then, sure enough, she cried herself right to sleep with the help of the pills she’d taken earlier.

I carefully untangled myself, putting the ice packs back in place on her face, then slipping the other two onto her ribs and stomach, turning on the TV so little house noises didn’t wake her up, then sat up, slamming my head into the headboard, trying to wrap my mind around the events of the night.

I don’t know how long I sat there, but at some point, there was a careful knock at the door that had me climbing up and going over to find Detroit standing there, face grim.

“What is it?”

“There’s a problem,” he said.

“With?”

“Crow and Sway are back. They need to talk to you.”

About the crime scene?

Fuck.

“Can you sit with her?” I asked. “I don’t want her to wake up alone.”

“Yeah,” he agreed, moving in as I stepped out.

Rolling my neck, I ran down the stairs to find the guys gathered in the living room.

“What is it?” I asked.

“Are you sure he was dead?” Crow asked, point-blank.

“Yeah,” I said. “Why?”

“Dunno how to say this, man,” Sway started. “But his body wasn’t there.”

“His… what?” I asked, the sound slitting out of me.

“Yeah. It’s weirder than that, though,” Sway went on. “There’s… no blood either.”

“I bashed his fucking face in until he didn’t even look human anymore. How the fuck was there no blood? Are you sure you went to the right building?”

“Yeah. We actually confirmed with Cill before coming back here,” Sway said.

The fuck?

Even as I was trying to register that information, though, there were headlights heading in our direction, making all of us tense.
