The legal books.

But, you know, theotherones too.

Maybe that was messy enough for her.

“Nyx, you lovely creature, you,” he said, giving me that familiar smile of his.

“Oh, don’t waste that pretty smile on me,” I said, shaking my head. “I know who you really want to give it to,” I said, backing up to the door that led into the back of the house where Lula’s office was located.

Cillian and the other brothers gave her the choice of what hours to work, but she was almost always there at night.

“Lula, your not-so-secret admirer would like to see you!” I called.

As much as she brushed aside his attention, I sure heard her heels click onto the floor pretty quickly after I told her Raff was around.

I got Raff’s obsession with Lula.

The woman was an absolute knockout.

High cheekbones, soft jaw, light brown eyes, flawless brown skin, and lashes that looked fake they were so thick, but they were her own. Then there was the body. Killer rack, nice hips, great ass, soft thighs. And she knew exactly how to dress to show all of that off.

Tonight, it was a pencil skirt that had a zipper all the way up the back and a light gray portrait-neck shirt.

And the heels.

Always the heels.

She was always pretty understated with her makeup, usually just a lightly tinted gloss to her lips. Some mascara.

Naturally perfect with a healthy dollop of class, that was Lula.

Those real emerald-cut diamond studs at her ears were her Christmas bonus from the Murphy brothers last year.

Extravagant.

But when she made it possible for them to hide their illegal income, yeah, they rightly spoiled her for it.

“What are you still doing in town?” Lula asked, voice all honey, as she went to the soda gun to get herself some ginger ale.

I wasn’t sure I had ever seen her drink, actually.

Ginger ale was her poison.

With a lime wedge in it.

If she was having a hard day, she would pop some maraschino cherries in them instead.

We worked in close quarters, but we hadn’t ever bonded the way I had with Delaney when she was still working at The Bog.

Lula just kind of kept to herself in her office.

Except, of course, when Raff wanted to lavish her with compliments for an hour straight.

“Oh, you know I simply can’t stand to be away from you, you ravishing creature, you,” he said, reaching out for her hand. “You know the only thing that could make this hand prettier is a ring right here,” he said, tapping her ring finger.

“Let me guess. You are the guy who is gonna put one there,” Lula said, but she didn’t pull her hand away, not even when Raff slipped his fingers in between hers.

“Absolutely. The day you decide you can’t see a future with anyone else but me, I will slip one on.”
