“Sing?”

“Yes.”

“No, sir. I’ve never been one to carry a tune, unfortunately.”

Feeling disappointed, I said, “I see.”

“Did you want me to sing to him?”

“No, that was not necessary. I had thought I heard singing, that is all.”

“I’m sorry.”

I nodded and she turned to go before stopping herself.

“It might have been the lady that were here.”

She instantly had my attention. “What lady?”

“She did not say her name, merely said she was looking in on the colonel’s welfare. Had me open the windows.”

“When did she come in?”

“Shortly after you left with his lordship.”

“What did she look like?” I was desperate for information, and Daisy seemed a little disturbed by my eagerness.

“She had dark hair. Not too tall. She wore a green dress.”

“Do you remember anything else about her? Would you recognize her if you saw her again?”

“Maybe,” she said nervously. “My sight is not as good as it should be. I ought to wear spectacles, but they are very expensive.”

I sighed. “It is quite all right, Daisy. Do not worry yourself over it. Thank you. You have been very helpful.”

She scampered away and I walked slowly to my room on the other side of the stairway. It seemed Richard’s angel was real, but who would have done such a thing? And how on earth had she healed him? Feeling a headache coming on, I lay on my bed and let myself drift into sleep.

Elizabeth

IranoutofDarcy House like someone was chasing me. I did not think anyone had seen me, but I was in such a rush I would not have noticed if they had. I burst out the front door just as my aunt’s footman was walking up the steps, presumably to deliver a note or fetch me.

“Freddie!” I called, and then spots were before my eyes and the next thing I knew, Freddie was half holding, half dragging me as we rushed across the street to my aunt’s. He had frantically looked left and right to see if anyone saw us, but I was not overly worried. I was wearing a large green cloak that concealed what I was wearing and the hood covered my face entirely. Even if someone did see us, and I cannot imagine they did not, they would have no idea who we were.

He rushed me into my aunt’s home and as soon as I saw Aunt Ida’s face, filled with surprise and concern, I smiled weakly at her, then promptly fainted.

I awoke in a soft bed, late afternoon sunlight streaming through the windows.

“How long have I been sleeping?” I asked.

My aunt was sitting in the chair by the window and replied, “I don’t know that I would call what you did sleeping, but it has been three hours since you collapsed in my vestibule.”

“I am sorry, Aunt. I was exhausted.”

“You should not be so reckless, Elizabeth. You could have been caught and then where would we be? Who was injured at Darcy House that you felt the need to endanger yourself in such a way?”

I sighed. “Mr. Darcy’s cousin, Colonel Richard Fitzwilliam. He was near death, aunt. I could not sit by and do nothing.”
