My mind goes blank and I’m not sure how to respond. “Still gone. I think they went to the cafeteria. The doctor said you needed space to recover. That just happened twenty minutes ago.”

“So am I cured?” She’s sarcastic when she speaks. “Did he get the tumor?”

“You’ll have to undergo some chemo and a little radiation as a precaution, but they got the tumor.” I press the button for the doctor as the shock of her being awake wears off. She needs to be checked immediately so she doesn’t pass out again, but I don’t want to alarm her with screaming and hollering for help. “The doctors said you might experience some memory loss, but that’s the extent of it.”

She nods and grins. “Who are you again?”

“Ha. Ha.” I kiss her forehead and breathe out the sigh of relief I’ve been holding back since she went into surgery.

“I don’t think I’ve forgotten anything. Ask me questions.”

“Okay… when’s your birthday?”

“June twentieth.” Her eyes widen. “Am I right?”

“I’m not sure. I don’t actually know your birthday.”

She laughs. “Okay, gangster, ask me something you know.”

“Okay, who is Anakin Skywalker?”

She rolls her eyes. “A hard one, please! I think my grandma knew the answer to that one.”

It’s so good to see her smile again. “Okay… a harder one. What year did the first Star Wars movie release?”

She huffs again and laughs. “1977. That’s still not hard. What happened with the billionaire?”

“It turns out, keeping you alive is in his best interest. He really believes you know something about this safe deposit box, so he was willing to let you have this lifesaving surgery.”

Her eyes roll. “All so he can have the pleasure of taking me out I assume?”

“You’re not ready for all that talk yet. Why don’t you lie ba—”

“You’re awake!” the doctor pronounces loudly when he steps into the room, removing a penlight from his pocket immediately to shine into Lucy’s eyes.

She holds up her hand and looks away as though she isn’t ready for the intrusion. “Could we linger on the foreplay a little longer, doc? I’m not sure I’m ready for all the direct stimulation.”

I can already tell she’s going to be fine.

The doctor laughs. “Sorry about that. I’m a little excited after all you’ve been through the past couple of days. And a few minutes ago, we thought you were a goner. Your tumor was tangled in various blood vessels which kept causing your blackouts. It’s also what made the removal so difficult. How are you feeling?”

Lucy scratches the back of her head and looks back toward the doctor. “Good, I think. I mean, I could use a wig, some new eyelashes, and some wax for this lip, but other than that, I’m ready to go. When are you thinking of releasing me, doc?”

The white-haired man glances back toward me, adjusting his glasses before looking back at Lucy again. “That’s up to your… friends.Medically speaking, as long as you’re eating, defecating, and you’re not having any blurred vision, you’re good to go. We’re going to plan on a few rounds of chemo and radiation, but we can plan those in about eight weeks, after you’ve healed from the surgery. Oh, and you’ll have to keep someone with you at all times for those eight weeks. If you pass out again or have any other abnormal symptoms, you’ll need to get to a hospital immediately.”

She nods and glances toward me as the door opens again. This time, it’s Saint and Dante with coffee and donuts.

“Fucking hell,” Saint growls, stuffing the donuts into my arms as he walks through the door and moves toward Lucy. She reaches her arms out for him and the two embrace. “You’re okay, Cinderella. You’re okay…” He kisses her head and holds her face in his hands as Dante makes his way to her side as well, holding her and kissing her cheek. The two of them are more emotional than I’ve ever seen them. I don’t remember a day when I’ve ever seen Saint cry, and he’s already bawled twice today.

“I’ll head out for now,” Doctor Moran says, slipping out of the room. “Luca has all the information. He can update you as needed.”

Saint and Dante don’t pay the older man any mind. Their attention is full force on Lucy, and for the first time since she got here, I’m imagining what life is about to be like. Sure, we shared her sexually that once, but the way Dante and Saint are looking at her is very reminiscent of the way I was just holding her a second ago. They want her the same way I do, not only for a night, but for good. We love her.

A knock on the door distracts us all, as a nurse peeks her head in. “Doctor Moran said our patient is awake. I have to get her to imaging for some new pictures.” The older woman steps inside the room and makes her way between Dante and Saint who are still holding Lucy tight by each hand. “I won’t keep her long, I promise. You’re a lucky girl, having all these big, strong, men around you.”

Lucy smiles and grips Saint’s hand for as long as the stretch off the gurney allows. “They’re just as lucky.”

The nurse laughs and takes her down the hall, leaving the three of us to stand in the empty room staring at each other like three love drunk idiots.
