Chapter Three

Lucy

I close my eyes and lean back on the pillow, trying to slow my heart as it slams against my chest. Wolfie’s kiss was short, but it knocked me for a loop. A loop further than I probably should’ve been knocked, considering he is currently holding the key to this chain thing I have going on.

I think I’ve read about this before, Stockholm’s or something. I think that’s what they call it. Then again, I haven’t really been captured long enough for that to form, and I was into him before he put the chains on me, so… maybe I’m just sick. Sick and a wee bit scared out of my fucking mind. At this point, I figure if they wanted to hurt me, they’d have done it by now. What scares me most is the open ocean we’re sloshing around in, and the impending doom of a rich drug lord who thinks I stole something from his cookie jar.

When Dante walks in, I can tell he’s nervous. About what, I’m not sure. I’m used to studying men for sex appeal, and he’s dripping wet. His wide stance, his straight face, you can tell he doesn’t fuck around, which is similar to the rest of them, but Dante has a glimmer in his eye like he’d probably bend me over and have his way with me right now if I let him. I’m not opposed to the idea. In fact, since seeing all three of the men in a room together, my romance novel orgy fantasy has been teasing at my brain. Maybe it’s a coping mechanism to help deal with the fact that I’m shackled by chains and bobbing in the deep blue sea.

“You look hungry. I brought you some salad,” Dante says, stepping into the room with a tray of food. He’s wearing a white linen button down that’s barely closed, showing off his firm chest. The man is hot, smokinghot. It’s either that or I’m that deprived of touch and desperate for Italian sausage. Either way, I can’t look away.

“Well, thanks, but I don’t eat salad. I like real food… of the Mexican variety. I’m not sure you can help me there.”

He tilts his head to the side and sets the tray on the end table. “You’re feisty. I kind of like it.”

“Most people do. It’s a quality I’ve honed over the years. I saw you looking at me through that doorway. You like more than my personality…” I smile and run my hand over the top of his oversized paw, hoping he’ll bite, but he doesn’t.

“You should be careful who you’re playing with,” he says, leaning into my ear. “You might get what you’re begging for.”

A twinge of excitement rushes through me where there shouldn’t be one. I need to get myself together.

“I think this is a stress response,” I say, squeezing my thighs to quell the thumping. “I get overly sexual when I’m stressed… and when I’m hungry, and thirsty, and in need of air.”

He looks away and smiles. “So all the time?”

I nod. “Kinda. The kinkier the better. I’m sure I need medical help or some kind of shock therapy, but my insurance won’t pay for it. Did you know that Legacy Bank offers the worst health insurance in the business? Plus, I hear the boss is a real ass. I’d recommend working anywhere else.”

He chuckles and lowers his large body next to me. With him comes the scent of leather and some kind of oil I’m not sure I’ve had the pleasure of inhaling. “Can I ask you something?”

“What?” I croak, my heart slamming against my ribcage as I imagine him taking me in all kinds of naughty positions.

I need help. I need help. I need help.Oh look, it’s a new mantra.

“Did you do it? They have some pretty incriminating videos.”

I wrinkle my brows. “Please, you’re mobsters. I don’t think a video is that incriminating.”

He laughs. “Really, how so?”

“Yeah, you can’t tell what box I’m pulling. And I told you already… I helped my friend Everleigh. Collins is an asshole. I’m not a criminal genius like all you bright fellas, but I’d say he stole the box and whatever is inside, then pegged me because I was an easy target. If you let me talk to him, I can—”

“No,” Dante says, his face softening. “I just needed to hear you say it directly.”

“And that’s it? You believe me?”

He stares at me long and hard, his deep brown eyes sparkle with flecks of green. “I do believe you, but I’m not sure anyone else does yet. You’re going to have to go with the flow if you want things to progress in your favor. Can you do that?”

I split half a smile and glance up at him. “Probably not.”

“Your life depends on it.”

I pinch my lips together and blow out a heavy breath. “Yeah, not sure that’s gonna make a difference. I’m just me, good or bad. I blame it on a lack of steady parenting as a kid and heavy drinking in my early twenties. Then again, this might be the way I’m wired. Some people are predisposed to this type of insanity, right?”

He smiles again, this time longer. “Don’t say I didn’t warn you. Saint can be a real pain in the ass.”

“Saint?”

“Sorry, the Wolf,” he laughs. “Luca and I call him both.”
