"Seriously? She's dating someone?"

"Yes. And she never told him about us. She never told the principal or her coworkers or the guy who lives downstairs."

"You're really angry, Brynn."

"I am. Why aren't you?" That odd gleam moved through her eyes again. "What aren't you telling me, Dani?"

Dani hesitated. "I just don't think she forgot us, that's all."

"What are you basing that on?"

"I don't know."

I didn't believe her. "You do know. Talk to me."

She stared back at me, then licked her lips and said, "I think—I think I saw her once."

Her words shocked me once again. "What do you mean, you think you saw her? When was this?"

"High school graduation. You went to fix your hair. I was standing in line, getting ready to go on the stage, and there were a lot of people milling around. I was looking through the crowd, and I saw a woman off to the side, under the trees. She was staring at me, and—"

"It was Mom?" I asked in disbelief.

"Our eyes met for a second, and then someone moved in between us, and I couldn't see her anymore. When they'd passed, she was gone."

I stared at her in amazement. "Why didn't you tell me?"

"I thought I imagined her."

"Dani," I breathed. "You should have said something."

"I didn't want to say something that would upset you when I didn't know if it was even true. You didn't tell me when you got the call last night," she reminded me. "It's the same thing."

"It's not. You're pregnant. You've been having problems and need to stay stress free. I wasn't any of those things in high school. I could have handled it."

"It probably wasn't her. Even if it was, she was gone in a flash."

"Knowing that she's alive now, I'm pretty sure it was her." I paused, thinking that Dani was right. Our mother hadn't forgotten completely about us. "She also has clothes from the boutique in her closet upstairs. Clothes with tags on them. She must have ordered them online."

"Are you serious? She has our clothes?"

"Yes. You're not going to tell me you also saw her in the store one day, are you?"

"No, of course not. I can't believe she bought some of our clothes." Dani shook her head in bemusement. "I wonder if Dad…"

"What about Dad?" I asked when she didn't finish her statement.

"I'm just wondering what he knows."

"Me, too. Did you tell him you thought you saw Mom at graduation?"

"Yes. He just gave me a hug and said he was sure she was watching down from heaven, that she was with me in spirit. I said I didn't see a ghost; I saw a real person. He said I was wrong, that I was just being hopeful. I don't believe he knew she was alive."

"I'm not so sure. I thought I saw Dad at Mom's school earlier today. He disappeared before I could catch up to him. I told myself that I imagined him, too, but I don't think I did. I think he's in San Francisco."

Dani's eyes widened. "That doesn't seem possible."

"At this point, anything is possible." I took a breath. "I told you the police are wondering if her past life caught up to her. What if it was Dad who caught up to her?"
