"I know she hurt you and your sister. She knows it, too. But it was to protect you."

"Well, I'm old enough to protect myself now. We need to go to the police. Or at least to the PI I'm working with. He can help us. But you have to tell us where to start. You have to give us a name."

Rachel gave me a long look, then turned her gaze back to the ocean. "I always seem to end up at a beach," she said.

I frowned at the odd comment. "What does that mean?"

"Just thinking how many times I've run to the ocean before making a momentous decision. I've seen a lot of water in my life."

"I've actually done the same thing," I said, feeling an odd connection to her.

"Some things pass from generation to generation."

"Like twins. I don't know how my mother didn't talk about you. Have you been with my mom since she went from Kim to Laura?"

"No. We weren't together. It wasn't safe. But we did keep in touch."

"Well, at least you had the opportunity to do that," I said bitterly.

"Are you and Dani close?"

"Extremely. She hates not being here now, but she has her own baby to protect."

"Is she having twins?"

"No. She's having one—a boy."

"Well, that's something wonderful, isn't it? Is her husband a good man?"

"Very good. He adores her." I started the car. "As much as I want to hear more about you and my mom and share stories about me and my sister, we need to move forward. Will you talk to the PI with me?"

She hesitated, then said, "All right. But I don't want to go back to your mom's house."

"I'll ask him to meet us for coffee."

"That should be okay," she said slowly. "Maybe he can help me find out where someone is."

"You're not going to tell me who that someone is, are you?"

"I'll tell you both at the same time."

"All right." I texted Jeremy that I needed to see him; I had some new and urgent information. I asked him to meet me at the café. He texted back almost immediately that he'd meet me there. Then I pulled out of the lot.

As we drove across town, I looked at Rachel and said, "Do you know who my biological father is?"

Her body stiffened. Then she shook her head. "Laura refused to tell me. He wasn't a good person, and she didn't want me to know who he was. She didn't want you to know, either. Don't go looking for him, Brynn."

"I can't believe she didn't tell you who he was. You're twins. You told each other everything, didn't you?"

"Not everything," Rachel said quietly. "And we weren't always that close. There was a time in our lives when we went our separate ways, when we were angry with each other. That was a mistake. If you and Dani ever have problems, try to work them out. Don't let anything divide you."

"I won't. But I can see the need for us to have our own lives. I don't want us to be each other's crutch or each other's anchor—you know what I mean?"

Rachel sighed. "I know exactly what you mean."

My phone started buzzing, and I saw Kade's name. When I stopped at a light, I grabbed the phone and sent him a quick text that I had a lot to tell him and if he was free, to join me, and Jeremy, and my AUNT—in capital letters. He texted back he was on his way.

"Who's that?" Rachel asked. "Boyfriend?"
