"But Rachel is my mom's twin sister. I know what that bond feels like, and I don't believe Rachel went to the hospital to hurt her sister. I think she went there to try to help her." I paused, frowning. "Maybe I'm being naïve."

"I'm going to go see what I can dig up on the NYU connection," Jeremy said. "If your mother was there on a music scholarship, I should be able to narrow it down. Hopefully, I'll know exactly who she is by the end of the night."

"That would be amazing."

"One more thing," Kade said. "I need the police file from my father's murder."

"Right. Brynn asked me for that," Jeremy said. "As soon as I get back to my computer, I'll send it to you. I have to warn you, there's not much in the way of evidence."

"I understand, but I would like to see it."

"I'll get it to you as soon as I can."

As Jeremy left, I tore off a chunk of the cinnamon pastry and popped it in my mouth. "This is good. Do you want some?"

"I'm amped up enough without adding any sugar." He paused. "You should have told me you were going to the hospital, Brynn. When I got back from the gallery, and you weren't there…" He ran a hand through his hair. "I know you don't answer to me, but damn—"

"I'm sorry you were worried. I was so shocked when the hospital called, I jumped in my car. I couldn't think about anything but talking to my mom."

"I get that. I'm glad you're all right."

"I'm fine, but I let Rachel out of my sight for a second, and I lost our best lead. I wish I'd gotten more information from her."

"Did she say where she was staying?"

"No. She did say that the police can't help, but she didn't say why. Only that I didn't know what I was dealing with, which is true."

Kade stared back at me, and I could see the wheels turning in his head.

"It looks like you have an opinion," I said.

"Just thinking. If they can't go to the police, then they either don't trust the police or they have something to hide."

"But why would the San Francisco police be a problem? I think their trouble, as Rachel called it, started in New York."

"With the robbery," Kade said, nodding in agreement. "There's a connection."

"I think so." I blew out a breath, shaking my head in bemusement. "I can't believe my mom has a twin that she never talked about. Apparently, they'd meet every few months when my mother took us to the museum, but it wasn't safe for them to be together."

"Perhaps Rachel is the person your mom met with in New Orleans."

I started at that suggestion. "She had to be. That makes sense."

"Did she say anything about your biological father?"

"Only that he was allegedly a terrible person, and my mom didn't want anyone to know who he was. Rachel warned me not to go digging into that secret. She was extremely agitated at the thought of me trying to find him." I paused. "Which makes me wonder if he's the guy at the center of all this now. He could even be a cop, which makes them reluctant to trust the police."

"Do you think your father knows about Rachel?" Kade asked.

"I doubt it. I think my mom left him in the dark about her past. But if he hadn't run away, we could ask him." I frowned. "Every single one of them is good at running, aren't they? No one wants to stay and face the music."

"Except you, Brynn."

"Which makes me brave or stupid; I don't know which."

"Let's go with brave."

I smiled. "I would prefer that."
