"I can't believe this," Dani said in shock. "Why would you audition without telling me? We have the store, our business. I need you, Brynn."

"It's not our business; it's your business."

"Our store is called Two Sisters. Of course it's ours."

"It's your vision; it always was. My dream was music. You know that."

"And what happens after this job? I'm just supposed to wait three months for you to come back?"

"No. You shouldn't wait. You should find someone to help you manage the store."

"So, you're never coming back?" Hurt entered her voice. "I can't believe you're doing this to me with everything else that's going on."

"I'm sorry. I wasn't going to say anything until this problem with Mom was resolved, but I don't know if there's an end in sight."

"What about when I have the baby? Where are you going to be, Brynn? I need you. And not just in the store. You're my sister. You can't miss this important time in my life. I'm going to have your nephew."

"I'll be back before the baby is born," I assured her.

"But you'll miss all the little moments…the first flutter, the first kick, my belly getting bigger."

"We'll talk all the time."

"It won't be the same. This is a scary time for me. I can't believe you'd do this now."

My guilt grew with every word that came out of her mouth, but I had to stay strong. "I've been putting it off for too long. If I don't take this opportunity, I don't know if there will be another one. I need you, too, Dani, but I also have to have a life."

"I've been stopping you from having a life?" she asked angrily. "I have been there for you every second of our lives. I have always looked out for you, Brynn. When Mom died, and you fell apart, I picked you up. I made sure you were okay."

"Yes, you did. But somewhere along the way, I started living your life, instead of mine."

"This isn't you, Brynn. You're just upset about everything that's going on, and you're all alone there. Please come home, and we'll talk about everything."

"I'm not leaving until I figure out what's going on with Mom and her twin sister. They're our family, Dani."

"You and I—that's our family."

"We're still a team, Dani."

"It doesn't sound that way. You're making decisions without me. So, do whatever you want. You're going to, anyway."

I sighed as Dani hung up on me. That conversation had not gone well, but it was done. I punched in Ray's number and got his voicemail. "I'm taking the job, Ray," I said. "But I'm out of town for a few days. Let me know who I need to talk to and what I have to do, and I'll do it. Thank you again for this opportunity. I owe you."

As I ended my message, I let out a sigh of relief. Despite Dani's negative reaction, at least I'd told her the truth, and I'd made a decision. I had one less problem weighing me down.

I took my phone and went downstairs.

Kade was engrossed in whatever he was reading on his computer. He didn't even look up when I sat next to him on the couch.

"Have you found anything?" I asked.

"Maybe," he said, turning his gaze to mine. There was a gleam of excitement in his eyes.

"What?" I asked.

"The owner of the house where my father was shot, the wealthy private collector—his name was James Holden."

"Okay," I said slowly. "Jeremy said that name before, but you look like it means something to you now."
