"All right. Why don't I put in a few hours of work and then pick up some Thai food to share? Interested?"

"Absolutely," I said.

"If you need anything before then, call me. I'm right downstairs."

"I'll be fine," I said, hoping that was true.

CHAPTERTWENTY-SIX

The doorbell woke me up,and I sat up on the family room couch in bemusement. I checked my watch as the bell rang again. It was after seven and it was dark outside. I'd apparently fallen asleep.

I grabbed my phone and saw a couple of texts from Kade, including the last one, which said he was outside. Jumping up, I moved quickly down the hall, checked to make sure it was him, and then let him in.

Relief filled his gaze when he saw me. "I was beginning to worry about you," he said, as he stepped inside, carrying a large paper bag that smelled delicious. "You didn't answer any of my texts."

"I fell asleep on the couch. Everything caught up to me." I tucked my hair behind my ear, feeling a little self-conscious about my appearance. I had no idea what I looked like, but it probably wasn't good.

"Good. I'm sure you needed the rest, and I'm glad that's why you were ignoring my texts." He led the way into the kitchen. "I wasn't sure what you liked, so I ordered a variety of dishes."

"It all smells great, and I'm not that picky."

"Neither am I," he said, as he pulled cartons out of the bag. "Especially when I'm hungry. I worked up an appetite."

"Sounds like you were productive," I said, seeing the lightness in his gaze.

"I was very productive until the end when I got stuck on how to finish one of my pieces. It was time to take a break."

"Does that happen to you often—getting stuck?"

"More often than I'd like. It usually means I've gone wrong a step earlier, and I have to figure out where that was."

"What do you do when you're blocked?"

"I push through it. When that doesn't work, I take a long ride somewhere on my bike, or I get in the shower. That seems to free my brain up."

The picture of a naked Kade getting inspired in the shower inspired all kinds of thoughts in my head. I wouldn't mind losing myself in Kade for a while. He was not only incredibly sexy, he was also incredibly kind. I hadn't come across that combination in a very long time, maybe ever.

Kade gave me a quizzical look. "Something wrong?"

I cleared my throat, knowing I could not tell him where my thoughts had gone just now. "Just thinking," I said vaguely.

Fortunately, Kade didn't press the question as he filled up his plate with Thai noodles, yellow curry, and shrimp. I took a little of everything as well and then we sat down at the table to eat.

"Thanks for picking up the food," I said.

"I didn't think you'd want to go out."

"No. I'm starting to feel more comfortable here in the house, even though it's probably not the safest place in the world for me. But no one has tried to get back in again, so that's a good sign." I paused. "I wonder where Rachel went after she left me. She must have a hotel room somewhere."

"Probably under a name we haven't heard of yet," Kade said dryly.

"I'm sure you're right." I paused as Kade pulled out his phone to read a text. "Everything okay?"

"Just a friend wondering when I'm coming back to New York." He sent a quick reply, then set down his phone and continued eating.

"What did you tell him?" I asked curiously.

"That I have no idea."
