"You love trains, don’t you?" the woman named Ellie asked. "Maybe one day I'll get you a train to play with."
"A big train? With lots of cars?"
"Definitely," she said with a smile.
He looked away from her as the train moved around the pond. "Ducks," he said with glee, pointing to the ducks playing in the water.
"They love to cool off in the pond," Ellie said.
"My dad says he can swim like a duck."
"I bet he can," she said. "Your mom and dad loved this park, the ducks, this train. They once rode it six times in a row."
"They did?" he asked in wonder.
"Yes.
"My mom is in heaven. Do you think she can see the train and the ducks from there?"
Ellie didn't answer. When he looked over at her, she was wiping her eyes.
"Are you crying?" he asked.
"I got something in my eye."
As they went over the bridge, he saw his dad walking across the grass. "Daddy's here," he said, pointing to his father. "I thought you said he couldn't come."
"I guess he changed his mind," she said tersely.
When the train stopped, he jumped off and ran toward his dad. "Do you want to ride the train with me, Daddy?" His dad grabbed his hand so tight, he squealed. "You're hurting me."
His father didn't even look at him, his gaze on Ellie. "I told you no train."
"Decker loved it. I knew he would. He is your son, after all."
"This isn't working."
"It was just a train ride. That's all," Ellie said.
"Why are you mad, Daddy?" he asked.
"I'm not mad," his dad bit out. "Come on, we have to go."
"We're still on for tomorrow night, right?" Ellie asked his father.
"We'll see," his dad replied.
"Goodbye, Decker," Ellie said, looking a little sad. "I had fun. Love you."
He looked over his shoulder as his dad dragged him toward the parking lot. Ellie wiped her eyes again, and this time he was pretty sure she was crying.
"Decker?"
He looked at Chloe in confusion.
"Do you want to take another ride?" she asked.
He realized then that the train had stopped.
