Twenty-Five

Diego

Her wide oceaneyes landed on mine, searching for an explanation.

The problem?

I had none. My hand was still over her hand, touching the soft skin of her thighs, covering her cute little stick-and-poke tattoo, and I couldn’t move. How did I tell her that her body was beautiful and that the way she fussed over it only made looking away that much more difficult?

I’d had a horrible time at the party when she was in those lacy shorts, trying to keep my eyes off her legs, but now, with the water sliding down her curves and her brown hair almost black as it framed her pale face... She was a siren. A song I couldn’t ignore.

She caught her bottom lip between her teeth, toying with me more. She had to be doing this on purpose. And if she wasn’t? She had power she didn’t know how to handle, and I didn’t either.

“Diego,” she breathed.

Her voice snapped me out of my response, and I pulled away. “You should wear a wet suit next time. The water’s cold.”

Her lips parted, drawing my gaze again. “That’s not what you said.”

I knew what I said.

And I couldn’t take it back.

“Say it again,” she breathed.

My stomach muscles clenched, and I couldn’t stop thinking about her lips. Those full lips. Just like her thighs. Curvaceous. Voluptuous. Everything I liked.

“I said...” I closed the gap between us, smelling her shampoo, the sharp ginger scent mingling with the saltwater in her hair. “If you keep covering those beautiful thighs, I’m going to lose my mind.”

Her lips parted, like they wanted me to pay attention. “Beautiful?”

I nodded sharply. She had to know how beautiful they were, right along with the rest of her.

“I thought...” She swallowed, her throat moving. “I thought you hated me.”

My laugh came out like a bark. “I do. You’re quick to judge, short with your words, glare like your life depends on it, and way too good at distracting me during class.”

She lifted her chin, not shying away from me. “I don’t like you either.”

“Oh yeah?”

“You act like you own the beach. Walk around school like you expect everyone to adore you. And I’m still annoyed that Heidi actually listens to you.”

My lips tipped up of their own accord. “So we agree. We don’t like each other.”

“Right.” She tilted her head, her eyes tracking from mine to my mouth.

I stepped closer, seconds from discovering if her lips were actually as soft as they looked.

“DIEGO!” my brother Mateo yelled from the back patio.

April jumped away from me like she’d been tased. And we both looked toward my house in time to see Kenzie following my little brother outside.

“YOUR GIRLFRIEND’S HERE,” Mateo shouted.

“She’s not my girlfriend,” I muttered, but it was too late. That cold, distant look was back in April’s eyes.

“I’m going home to change,” she said. “I’ll come back later to do the homework.”
