His eyes run down my body and then back up before he winks at me. “I’m going to get ready for the day. It’s a big one,” his voice is bordering on fucking chipper.
That has been something to get used to because I’ve never been a morning person, but he has to get up pretty early considering his job. We’ve found a way to make it work and there haven’t been many nights in the last six months that we haven’t spent together. He kisses me when he leaves for work and whispers that he loves me in the morning. I then roll over and starfish in the middle of the bed.
It works for us.
My heart starts to race in my chest, and I look around my room where there are boxes along the walls ready to be moved. The only things not packed are the clothes I’m going to put on today, a few things in the bathroom I’ll need to get ready and the sheets on the bed. Everything else is ready to go.
My heart isn’t speeding up because I’m afraid. Not today. I’m excited.
Rhett looks at me closely. “Are you okay?”
I jump out of the bed and close the distance between us, not missing the way his eyes heat as he takes in my naked body. When I wrap my arms around him, I pull him closer and kiss along his jaw before whispering in his ear, “I’m good. I’m excited.”
His strong arms wrap around me and hold me close as he buries his face in the crook of my neck. There’s so much hope in his voice, “Yeah?”
“I love you,” I murmur, loving the way he squeezes me in response.
“I love you, Phoenix.” He kisses right below my ear, and I shiver in his arms. “I’m damn proud of you.”
I can feel the truth in his words as they whisper across my skin. Not only is he proud of me, but I’m proud of myself.
Soon, some of the family and two of Rhett’s coworkers will be arriving to help us move my stuff. I’m looking forward to it instead of being afraid of what it all means. I know what it means. It means we’re moving forward and into forever.
I also know I can trust Rhett. He’ll protect my heart and he won’t hurt me. He’s all in and, now, I am too.
There’s excitement in my voice, “Let’s start this next part of our lives.”
