The guy she just turned down isn’t even looking at her now, his eyes already roaming over the club, and I have no doubt he’s looking for his next mark. There are plenty of attractive women here tonight so I’m sure he won’t have any problems.

When he steps away from the bar, not even looking back at Phoenix, my heartbeat starts to slow down. I don’t know what I would have done if she agreed to his invitation. Probably lost my shit which is something I’ve never done before.

I can’t remember the last time I was in a fight. Never?

I haven’t had a reason to defend someone physically. For her, though, I would do it.

My Firestorm’s eyes flash with annoyance when she looks at me and I find myself grinning at her. She huffs out a breath, “What are you doing here, Rhett?”

“I wasn’t aware I needed a reason to come here. As you know, it’s become one of my favorite places to frequent,” there’s a teasing tone to my voice. I lean forward to make sure she can hear me. “I missed you this morning.”

Phoenix nibbles on her bottom lip and her eyes cut over to Trix who is serving a few drinks. “You know what this was, Rhett,” there’s a pleading in her tone and I’m not sure if it’s because she hopes I believe the bullshit she’s trying to give me or because she doesn’t want me to make a scene.

I have no intention of making her uncomfortable at work, but I’m also not going to give up.

“Maybe I need you to spell it out for me, little Firestorm.”

“It was one night,” the annoyance is clear in her voice, but it does nothing to wipe the grin from my face.

She’s so fucking cute when she’s annoyed. The way her cheeks are pinking, I can only hope she’s thinking about what it felt like to be filled by my cock. I know I’m thinking about the way her pretty pussy squeezed my length.

“We both know that’s not true.” She blinks at me, her mouth hanging slightly open with my bold words, delivered with pure conviction.

“I don’t do more than that, Rhett,” her voice softens when she says my name and the wince on her face tells me she heard it too.

It’s not much, but it’s enough. There’s also a longing in her eyes I’ve never seen before. Everything about this woman is calling to me and telling me to make her believe as much as I do.

I can do it. I must do it.

“How about this—go out on a date with me,” I offer.

Her eyebrows furrow with confusion. “A date?” The words come out slowly as if she doesn’t understand or know how to say them.

“Yeah, Phoenix. A date. I’ll take you out. We’ll have a good time. We can talk about things and get to know each other.” I smile softly at her, hoping I’m not scaring her. “A date.”

She leans back and crosses her arms across her chest, her eyes assessing me as the lights from the club flow over her body and making it difficult for me to concentrate on holding her gaze instead of taking her in.

I know what her skin feels like under my palms now. I know the sounds she makes when she’s falling over the edge of bliss. I just need a chance to show her there is more between us than one night together.

I swear I’m holding my breath while watching her mind work over my words. I already know it’ll be a huge step for her if she agrees.

“Okay, Rhett,” she sighs, her eyes closing as if she can’t believe her own words. “One date.”

I breathe again, grateful as fuck. “That’s all I need, little Firestorm.”

The look she gives me says she doesn’t believe me, but she has no idea what she’s done by agreeing to give me a chance. I won’t fuck it up and I’ll show her what I already know—she’s mine and we’re meant to be.

CHAPTER 5

PHOENIX

I can’t remember the last time I’ve been on a date. It’s almost a foreign concept to me. It also means that I’m letting Rhett in a lot more than I ever wanted to let a guy in, and all we’re talking about is a date. It feels like I’m standing on the edge of a pit and the ground beneath me is starting to crumble.

Am I going to be lost in the darkness below? Will I be hurt when I land? How will I ever keep my footing?

I don’t have a single fucking answer and it’s driving me up the wall.

Which is why I’m pacing while staring at the clock and wondering if I still have time to get out of this whole date thing tonight. I look in the mirror next to my door one more time and I still look the same as I did just a few minutes ago. Wild. Scared. Excited.
