“We haven't been this way yet. I'm curious to see what's down here,” Ash says with a wiggle of his eyebrows. I laugh and give him a shove, then wrap my arm around his neck.

“Okay, but let's make it quick. We don't want to be on Mother Cross' shit list, especially with our trials coming up.”

Three weeks until I can finally join the brotherhood. I won't fuck that up. We have been waiting for this day since we learned about the Locked Souls Society. To say we were caught off guard is an understatement.

I never knew the hidden importance of Holy Cross Academy until our first night here, when we were kidnapped and brought down to the crypts. But, then again, I guess that makes sense. After all, rule number one is: no one outside the Society can know about the Society.

Archaic? Yeah, but it seems to be working. Even though I’m still left in the dark about everything.

I wish someone would just tell me already what I will have to do, and what I’ll get in return. My best friend, Jonas, is joining for personal reasons, but I don’t need to be initiated into this Society. Do I want to be? Yes.

Having a brotherhood for life is extremely appealing to me, and I’m glad my friends are initiating with me. I just need time to speed up so we can get the formalities over and done with.

A flash of gold catches my eye and I pause, glancing at a room with the door cracked. There is a shadow hidden, but a gold bracelet is shining from the light of the hall. I want to get closer and find out why someone is there spying on us, but hazel eyes glance up and they look scared.

I don’t think she knows I’ve seen her, so I smack Ash on the arm and point to the girl hidden behind the door. He gives me a glare before looking over, then keeps walking down the hall. I don’t want to let the girl know she’s been spotted, so I continue after him. We stop around the corner and wait.

“Who do you think she is?” I ask Ash. I didn’t get that good of a look at her. My phone buzzes and I raise a brow at Ash. He gives me an earnest look in response, so I roll my eyes and glance at my messages. Right, we’re supposed to be quiet down here.

Ash: What the fuck is she doing down here?

Me: How the hell do I know?

A noise from down the hall alerts us that she’s on the move, so I very calmly turn the corner and head back her way, with Ash trailing behind me. The girl freezes and turns, looking at us with huge hazel eyes, once again frightened. She reminds me of a doe, frozen in fear from a car’s headlights before it gets struck.

Long, light brown hair curls around her face and hangs over her shoulders. She’s curvy in all the right places, and has the plumpest lips I have ever seen.

I stop moving and give her a little wave. “Hi,” I murmur, and her shoulders start to slowly relax. She gives me a small smile, still looking weary.

“Hi,” she says in a soft voice. I wait for her to say more, but it looks like I’m going to have to.

“Are you lost?” I ask her and she shakes her head, glancing behind me at Ash. I need to know why she’s here.

“No, I’ve been here before. A long time ago. But I should be going.”

She takes a few steps away, still facing us, not giving us her back. I glance at Ash, and he’s got his mean smile on his face. No wonder the girl is scared. He looks like a wolf about to attack his prey, and she looks like an innocent baby lamb, ready to be devoured.

I smack him on the chest and mouth ‘cut it out’. He rolls his eyes and takes in a breath, then gives the girl a smirk.

“Hey, I’m Ash. This is Bastian. So, if you’re not lost, what are you doing down here?” She blinks at us and waves toward the empty hall.

“I’m Chastity, and I assume, the same thing you are. Avoiding people. Exploring.” She shrugs her shoulders and I laugh. Maybe this little mouse isn’t as scared as she looks. I take a step closer and give her a grin.

“No one is allowed in this part, so are you going to tattle on us or can we keep this our little secret?”

I’m playing with her, but when her face turns ghostly white, I worry I may have fucked up.

“Hey, Chastity, are you okay? I was just teasing.” I glance at Ash, and he’s got a contemplative look on his face, as if this girl is a puzzle he’s trying to solve.

She takes a few deep breaths and shakes her head.

“Yeah, I know you were. Sorry, I just forgot to eat, and I can’t get in trouble on the first day either. So I can keep a secret, if you can.”

“Wait, first day? I thought you said you’ve been down here before?” Ash asks, and I shove him a little. Seriously, is he trying to make this girl run away from us? She’s on edge enough as it is, and I want to get to know her better.

I move closer and offer her my hand. “Oh, well that’s an easy fix. How about we go grab some food in the dining hall? It’s about supper time now anyways.”

“Um, yeah that would be nice. Thank you.” She grasps my hand with hers and I gasp at the shocks that run through me from her touch. She ends up pulling me towards the stairs as I fight to get my feet to move. Ash grumbles behind us, and I try to think of something to say.
