I have had to break so many promises over my short life, I try to keep the ones I make these days, no matter how small.

I have to say, Father Levi surprised me with punishment by caning. I’m still walking a little funny, to be honest, and it hurt so much more than I could have imagined. Continuing to pray wasn’t an option in the face of pain like that, and I’m just glad he didn’t choose to punish me for it.

Taking a breath, I force myself to take another bite.

“What are your plans tonight, Chastity?” Bast asks with a smile.

Biting my lip, I decide to tell them. I can’t lie and say I’m staying in the apartments now that I’m staying in the dorms, and my new roommate is sitting right next to me.

“I have to see Father Levi for tutoring,” I tell them, staring at the table. They say your eyes are the windows to your soul, and I don’t want them to see the truth.

“Oh? So the hardass has decided he’s tired of ignoring you, and is now giving you the gift of his surliness?” Ash teases.

I can’t help myself and snort as I giggle. Covering my mouth, I look up at Ash with wide eyes, and he winks at me. Slowly, the three of them are growing on me.

Finishing up dinner, I smile at Tempest. She’s still frosty toward me, and I can tell she’s trying to mull over everything I told her, but she did keep a pleasant conversation during our meal. So I’ll call that progress. I really don’t want another hostile roommate.

“I’ll be by the room after tutoring, and then maybe we can talk?”

She gives me a hard look, as if she’s trying to figure me out. “Yeah, okay. I’ll see you later,” Tempest murmurs as she walks away.

“Rough start with your new roommate?” Jonas asks with a raised brow.

Sighing, I shrug. “You could definitely say we got off on the wrong foot,” I confess.

“Well, I have faith you’ll be able to right things. You’re a hard person to dislike,” he whispers into my ear as he leaves, making me shiver.

I really shouldn’t like him, but Jonas is so easy to be around. Today has been stressful, and depending on how bad tonight is, I may want to bake again. Maybe I’ll ask Jonas to join me.

Holding that thought close to my heart, I make my way to Father Levi's office. Lately, he’s been asking me to meet him in his office instead of the classroom, and I think it’s because the severity of each punishment has been worse each time.

“Hello, Father Levi,” I say softly, standing outside of the room.

“Miss Cross, are you ready for your task today?” he asks.

I stare at him as I try to gauge his mood. He looks somber and worried, but I’m unsure if the worry is for me. I’m nothing more than a nuisance, a girl my grandmother and his boss remanded into his care.

“Yes, Father,” I say quietly. I can’t show him that after the last session, I’m wary.

“Come in. How are your legs after the other day?” he asks. Opening my mouth to speak, I squeak in surprise as he grabs my arm, pushing me down onto the table. His hand holds both my wrists at the base of my spine, his powerful thighs crowding me so I can’t step back. My breath comes faster as his hand touches my thigh.

“I want to see how they’re healing. May I?” he asks.

Maybe it’s the abject consent, but this doesn’t trigger me. “Yes, Father. I submit, Sir.”

Father Levi grunts to himself, and I swear I hear him curse under his breath. Priests don’t curse, do they? He pulls up my skirt, and as the cool air brushes my skin, I tell myself that I’m shivering due to that and not the man staring at my butt.

Father Levi palms my ass, his thumb rubbing one of the cuts gently.

“Have you been putting ointment on these?” he asks.

It is kind of awkward to have a conversation like this, but I nod. My hair is all over my face, and I can’t see him.

Smack.

Yelping, I toss my hair so I can determine what he’s doing, but I can’t. “Ow!” I gasp.

“Speak when you’re spoken to, or you’ll be spanked, is that understood?”
