Chastity can barely look at me, and it’s infuriating. I want to shake her, tell her I had no choice, and that I need her to be our Eve. Levi came back from his meeting and chewed me out for my impulsivity. Telling me angrily that the Elders would deliberate and decide if she could be our Eve. He reminded me this was highly unusual behavior.

Levi then handed me a toothbrush and cleaner, and told me to clean the men’s washroom. It’s a shared bathroom, and it can get really disgusting. I threw up twice cleaning it, but it was still worth it. Chastity is worth it. She’s the only girl to catch my interest, and learning about her past and how strong she is makes her more attractive to me.

I have a project due soon, and usually Jonas would help me, but he seems distracted lately, so I’m in the library researching alone. Needing a new resource to back up my point, I get up to find a book that discusses virtue and temptation. It’s late, and not too many people are here. I’m hoping to hurry this up and spend some time with my friends.

Weaving through the bookcases, I hear a breathy sigh. Frowning, I wonder what’s going on. Jonas told me about how he found two of our classmates fucking, and that apparently, the library is the new hookup spot. Honestly, I’m not all that surprised because the nuns who work the library are content to read up front while we work.

Feeling like a creeper, I keep walking, peeking around the corner. They say curiosity killed the cat, and they’re not wrong. My jaw drops as I see Chastity and her roommate giggling. Chastity is smiling openly, happiness shining in her eyes, and my chest clenches. I want her to look at me like this.

“I know we have work to do, but I’m enjoying our break too much,” Tempest murmurs, leaning forwards to kiss her neck. Chastity smiles, leaning in as her head drops back. Tempest’s hand disappears under Chastity’s shirt and I watch in growing anger as she moans. I never would have thought I’d need to fight for her affections against a girl.

Chastity looks amazing as she writhes against Tempest, but I wish I was with her instead.

“What are you doing hiding in the shadows, Ash?” Bridget asks, looking over my shoulder. I jump, looking at her in horror. Shit, it’s one thing for me to see, but now there’s no way this will stay quiet.

“Oh my God,” she says with a grin.

Chastity and Tempest don’t notice we’re nearby, lost in their own world. Honestly, not many people come back here. Bridget just tends to find me, no matter what. Bad break.

“I can’t wait to tell Mother Superior,” Bridget says with a giggle. “Maybe she’ll beat her in the name of saving her soul. Oooh. Or maybe they’ll just throw her out. I can’t wait for this bitch to be gone.”

Whirling, Bridget starts to run for the exit. Shit, what is happening? I chase after her. “Bridget! No, you can’t say anything about this,” I hiss. “Homosexuality is the worst sin there is here, and you're condemning her if you go in and tell her grandmother what you saw.”

Bridget huffs, rolling her eyes at me over her shoulder. “If this is supposed to be a deterrent from me telling, you’re going about it all wrong. Now I can’t wait to tell her!”

Agast, I watch as she knocks on the door to Mother Superior’s office.

“Who’s there?” she calls out. “I’m very busy today, and I don’t have time for nonsense.”

“It’s Bridget, Mother Cross, and I’m here with Ash to tell you about a new development with your granddaughter. I remember you said we should come to you if we saw her doing something to interfere with her redemption,” she lies, eyes glinting with evil glee as she stares at me.

No. I don’t want to be involved in this. Shaking my head, I hiss, “I don’t want to be a part of this. No. Bridget!”

She grabs my arm, hauling me over to her just as Mother Superior opens the door. “Both of you? This has to be quite the sin. Please, come in and tell me.”

I walk in and have to listen to Bridget tell her all about what we saw. She expands on the details, making it so much worse than it was. Mother Cross turns a shade of red I’ve never seen before, and I feel ashamed of myself. Ruining Chastity this way doesn’t serve a purpose, doesn’t help my brothers or my position in the Society. It’s just cruel.

Feeling as if I need to help Chastity in some way, I grab the guys to talk to them after Mother Cross dismisses us. Maybe we can get ahead of this somehow.

TEMPEST

“Hey, Tempest, may I speak with you a moment?” Ash pulls me aside in the busy corridor and ushers me into a small room. I was headed to class, and now I’ll probably be late.

“What is this about?” I ask with a sigh. Looks like the gang’s all here. Bastian is sitting in Father Levi’s chair, with Jonas sitting on the desk.

Huh, no Father Levi. They must have commandeered his office space. It’s no secret they spend a lot of time with him, since he’s their mentor.

Ash almost looks guilty, and I have a heaviness starting to grow in the pit of my stomach.

“I don’t know what you’ve been up to with your roommate, but you know it’s not going to fly here, right?” Ash asks, frowning. “It’s a sin, and she’s Mother Superior’s granddaughter.”

“Wait,” I say, the room starting to blur as my breath comes faster. “I don’t understand.”

Jonas touches my arm, sighing when I flinch.

“Look, I think you can be attracted to whoever you want to be. I don’t necessarily enjoy this part of our doctrine, but…Tempest, you weren’t exactly discreet. Did you guys have to mess around in the library?!”
