Page 42 of Hunted By Them

My mind was tired. The roller coaster it was on had glided to a stop, but everything I had learned was still rattling around in my brain. By the time Hunter had finished telling everyonewhat he’d learned about our little mate, I was feeling more than slightly guilty about the way I treated her.

Still, my little omega would need to learn to submit and not question me in front of my men. That was the fastest way to get me to lose my temper, and I had a habit of saying things I didn’t mean when I was angry. Hunter and I had come to blows more than a few times over unintended words.

“Before we close up shop,” I stared at Doc, “how’s Granny?”

Doc snorted a laugh. “Driving my nurses up a wall now that she’s woken up. Demanding we let her go because, and I quote, ‘I don’t need some pimply faced med school dropout helping me wipe my ass.’” The group howled with laughter. Sounded like Granny.

“Otherwise, she’s on the road to recovery,” he continued with an amused smile. “You can come visit her anytime. I’m sure my poor, abused nurses will be glad for the break.”

“Will do,” I assured him. “Okay, we will recon—”

“What do you mean you can’t open the fucking door?” A loud crash echoed through the room. “Open this motherfucking door right now, or I swear by the Moon Goddess, you will regret it.”

Hunter and I eyed one another for a moment, another crash sounding in the distance. This time it sounded like the one of the windows had been hit.

“Um…dismissed.” Hunter banged the gavel before he shot out of his seat, running toward the disturbance. It didn’t take two guesses to figure out who was creating such a ruckus. Freya was the only one who wasn’t aware that the doors and windows bolted shut automatically during Church. We’d designed the club that way so we couldn’t be caught unaware while in session. Only patched members had the ability to get in and out.

Not even the foxes knew the code.

I strode into the room behind Hunter, amused at the scene before me. Freya stood with one of the dining room chairs high above her head, ready to throw it at the window.

“You can’t break those windows with a chair.” Hunter gave her an amused smile. “They’re shatterproof, Red.” The little omega snarled. She didn’t move to throw it at the unbreakable glass, but she didn’t put it down.

“Let me out,” she hissed at him. “I want to leave.” Hunter’s brows drew together as he studied her. Had what I done impacted her that much? I doubted it. She was a fiery thing. There had to be something more going on.

“Why don’t you tell me what’s wrong?” Hunter pressed, shifting toward her slightly. She caught the move, snarling at him again before stepping back.

“I want to leave,” she spat angrily. “I’m not staying here with you. If you think for one second that I would willingly be your mate, you’re wrong. I’m done.” Mariah took in a sharp breath the moment my little wolf had uttered the word mate.

That explained it.

“You weren’t saying that last night when you took my knot,” Hunter growled, his voice low and seductive as he tried to defuse the situation. I waited to see what the little hellion would say. She didn’t disappoint.

“And from the sounds of it, you’ve had your knot in every pussy here.” With a snarl, she threw the chair at his head. He ducked, narrowly dodging it. “I’m not going to be second to other women.”

That was a low blow. We all had a past, and sure, Hunter was a playboy, but he hadn’t thought about anyone else since he’d seen her at the river. He’d tried to get her out of his head, but it hadn’t worked. Neither had his cock, apparently.

“That’s a bit judgmental,” I growled from behind my brother. “From what I hear, you weren’t exactly virginal either.”

She screeched, reaching for another chair and hurling it at me. Laughing, I dodged the sloppily thrown item.

“I’ve been raped regularly since I was sixteen, asshole,” she screamed at me, her face a deep shade of red. Was it anger or humiliation? It didn’t matter. My laugh had died in my throat, and the entire clubhouse had gone silent. “So I’m sorry if not being a virginal mate has you so disgusted with me, but I didn’t have a choice in that. You both had a choice, and if you had sex before, great. Good for you. But you”—she pointed her finger at me, eyes wild—“you knew we were mates last night, and you still decided to get your rocks off with someone else.”

What now?

I turned my narrow eyes on Mariah, who stood awkwardly at the back of the room, her face etched with worry.

“I would have been more careful with my words had I known she was your mate.” She looked at the floor, embarrassed. Freya snorted, her arms crossed against her chest as she leaned to one side, hip cocked out. Why did her defiance and anger make my cock hard as steel? I wasn’t into brats. Although I’d slept with a few over the years, I liked my women submissive. Freya was anything but.

“No.” She shot a look at Mariah. “I’m glad you told me the truth. That you were with him last night and are every night.”

Hunter groaned, running a hand down his tired face.

“I’ve spent my entire life being humiliated and degraded.” Her chest was heaving. I could hear her heart thudding wildly behind her ribs. “I’ve been beaten and ignored. I won’t be a mate to two men who have no interest in me.”

Hunter’s entire body seemed to deflate when she uttered those words.

“Is that really what you think?” he asked. The hurt was unmistakable.
