“Excuse me, but the captain has turned on the seat belt sign and is ready for take-off. Please take your seats.” The attendant interrupts us, her knowing gaze briefly landing on where our bodies touch. She’s probably seen a lot of couples in compromising situations, but this felt intimate and more real than fake.

“I think you can dial back the, uh, affection,” I whisper. Peeking over his shoulder, I notice everyone settling into their seats, except for Ben, who quickly averts his eyes after I raise an eyebrow. “I’m not sure what Miranda told you, but making out in front of everyone is not necessary. Hand holding and gazing at me like a puppy dog will do. I don’t expect you to actually be attracted to me.”

In response, Rex takes one of my hands, placing it on his chest, rubbing my sensitive flesh until I try to tug my hand away. Holding tight, he refuses to let me go. Absorbing his heat, I hold his gaze in a silly standoff.

“This may have started as a favor or whatever, but make no mistake, Heather, what I feel for you has been on a slow simmer for a while. And now I get to touch you. Nothing, not even your insecurity, will keep me from showing you how good it can be between us. And right now, what is currently pressed up against all your sexy curves is very real. For you.”

My breath hitches at his words, the truth of his body’s reaction to mine sinking in.

He isn’t playing a role.

Rex is all that I requested and more to help me make my ex regret treating me so badly. And I want to believe him.

But can I? And more importantly, can my heart survive the next few days of playing a role and then walk away when it’s over?

The thundering of my heart syncs up with the pounding in my dick. The all too brief, yet explosive, encounter with Heather keeps me hanging back as she walks away. I need another moment to calm the fuck down. The way her body is lighting up, the immediate flash of desire in her blue eyes, leaves no doubt in my mind. There will be no turning back for me.

She is mine.

And I’m prepared to do everything and anything to show her we are meant to be. Starting now. Well, soonish. Looking toward her again, my gaze lands on her ass as she walks back to her seat, her hips slowly swinging.

My dick perks up again, so I begin envisioning a recent call my partner, Austin, and I’m struggling to get it under control. It sobers me, allowing me to walk past everyone else on the plane like I wasn’t hard as a rock minutes ago.

Since the flight will be long, there’ll be plenty of time to touch her, and tease more beautiful blushes from her.

Buckling back in, Heather does her best to avoid eye contact with me. I scan the cabin only to find her ex glancing back and forth between us, a puzzled look on his face.

Too bad, you had your chance. Grinning at the man who’d bruised my woman’s heart, I sit down, stretch, then place an arm over her shoulders. She stiffens at my touch, but I gently squeeze her, tugging her closer. She relaxes, giving me a sweet, shy smile.

“You look great. I like the color of your dress. It brings out the flecks of grey in your eyes.”

Heather’s eyes go wide at my words. Hmm, not used to compliments, or does she think I am playacting?

Lowering my voice, I say, “Real talk. They do. Your eyes are gorgeous. And I think we need to come up with some nicknames. You know, something more personal than just ‘babe,’ ‘sweetheart,’ or ‘honey.’ What’s your favorite treat?”

One of her eyebrows arches, and I sink just a bit further under her spell. When I first saw her in the ER, she’d been professional, confident and, even while wearing all that PPE gear, my body recognized her as mine.

Unfortunately, I quickly discovered she didn’t take my flirting seriously because before I could ask her out, she transferred to the ICU and got engaged to the cheater. And, until an hour ago, I hadn’t seen her since. But I’d never forgotten her.

I’ll take this second chance and show her just how good it will be between us.

“Hmm? That’s actually a really good idea.” Heather’s answer surprises me as her eyes brighten at my suggestion.

Scooping a lock of her blonde hair into my palm, I rub the silky strands through my fingers, never breaking eye contact. “Oh, I have lots of really good ideas when it comes to you. All you have to do is ask. I’m up for anything.”

Heather’s lips form into a tempting “O.” Her response leaves me debating between telling her in detail what my favorite idea is—and it has everything to do with us being naked—or pressing my lips against hers for a longer, deeper kiss so I can find out exactly what she tastes like.

Unfortunately, the flight attendant prevents me from doing either.

“Would either or you care for a glass of champagne?” Two glasses are on the tray for us and the sound of clinking glasses jolts me from the intimate moment.

“What do you say? Let’s celebrate.” Before she can react, I place a quick kiss on her forehead, then take both glasses off the tray.

“To us. To our future and to Tamara and Stefan.” I purposely speak louder so everyone can hear. I touch my drink to Heather’s, holding her gaze as we take a sip.
