A moment later, Madison helped her back to her seat and returned to the galley to collect the menu cards and distribute them to the four passengers on her side. After taking drink orders, she set the tray table with starchy white placemats and bowls of assorted nuts, and returned with a glass of wine for Elena, vodka for the fiftyish man behind her, scotch for Rick, and gin for the career woman in the front. Next, she collected their orders for dinner and later brought the various meals.

Elena and the young woman had requested the chicken plate, minestrone soup, and tiramisu for dessert. Rick and the other man went for filet mignon, salad, and chocolate cake.

“How is your food?” Madison stopped by every passenger’s side and asked the ritual question, followed by “Can I get you anything else?”

“The food is delicious. It would’ve been much better if you could’ve shared it with me.” Rick sighed.

She chuckled. “I’ll eat in a moment, after I tuck you all into bed.”

His lips stretched into a big grin. “Looking forward to your tucking ... and my goodnight kiss.”

Shaking her head, she suppressed a nervous laugh, and left him to clear the tray tables.

Preparing beds for the night was the last task before taking a break in the galley. She started with Elena, then Heather Mackenzie, followed by Mitch Connor, and last but not leastshe paused next to Rick’s seat. By then, Sue-Ann had already finished her side and dimmed the lights.

“I’m here to fix your bed.”

“Be my guest.” Laughing, he wiggled his eyebrows and stood to let her unfold the seat. He’d already used the restroom and changed into a sweat suit and airplane socks. “Can I help?”

“It would definitely help if you stepped aside and let me do my job.”

“Yes, ma’am.” Crossing his arms, he obeyed, watching her intently.

“Here. Your bed is ready. You can lie down.”

He stretched over the temporary couch, folding his hands on his chest. His gaze roaming over her, he waited without uttering a word.

She glanced around. All was quiet inside the darkened plane. She covered him with a blanket and bent to quickly brush her lips over his. To give him credit, he kept his hands folded, but returned her kiss.

“Have a good night, Rick.”

“Thank you, babe. I wish I could keep you here with me.” His hand gently pressed on her back.

She straightened. “Sweet dreams.”

“You bet.”

She should return to the safe haven of the galley before he came up with any crazy ideas.

For the next few hours, their passengers slept like well-behaved kids. Madison and Sue-Ann ate dinner, cleared the galley, and sat in their seats to rest and doze off.

“Glad you’re able to relax,” a familiar voice murmured next to her.

Madison raised her eyebrows and peered at the tall figure blocking the feeble light above her seat. “You’re not sleeping?”

“I was. I feel badly enjoying a comfortable stretch whileyou’re cramped into this rough position.”

“Not to worry. Like soldiers, we’re used to catnapping anywhere, anytime we can steal a moment.”

“I can see that.” His chin jerked toward Sue-Ann who’d drifted, her wrist supporting her cheek.

“As soon as we land, we’ll be able to enjoy a long redeeming sleep at the hotel.”

“Which hotel is that?”

“Intercontinental.”

“What a coincidence. I plan to stay there.”
