“Thank you. You hear that, Daddy?” Mark pulled at his sleeve. He grinned and then called, “Wait, miss. Does that mean we can go on the plane before the others and explore?”

She burst out laughing. “You will go inbefore the others, but you’ll not be allowed to explore anything.”

“Why not? We won’t disturb anyone, if there’s no one on the plane.”

“There are no passengers, but the crew is there. I mean the pilots and flight attendants. They’ll ask you to stay in your seat and fasten your seat belt.”

“Bummer. Huh, sorry, miss, I mean it’s going to be terribly boring.”

“Enough questions, Mark. Sit with your brother and enjoy some cookies.”

Fifteen minutes later, the young woman approached him. “I received a call from Flight 63. You should go to the gate for early boarding.”

“Thank you. You’ve been great with my children. Come on, kids.” The boys put on their backpacks and walked with him.

When they arrived at the jetway entrance, Rick presented the boarding passes and had the boys walk ahead of him. A familiar figure stood at the door of the plane.

“Welcome aboard, Mr. Lambert, Mark, Michael,” Madison greeted them with her lovely smile and calm demeanor.

“Thank you.” Rick smiled, not sure how she expected him to answer.

“Let me show you to your seats.” They followed her.

“Mark, you’re here. You Michael, here. And your dad, isthere.” She pointed to each seat.

“Do we have to sit right away?” Mark had the guts to ask.

“Mark, don’t start with the endless questions,” Rick threatened, his eyes narrowing.

“Excuse me, Mr. Lambert.” Madison frowned. “If you don’t mind, I have a surprise for your sons.”

In other words, he should back off and let her handle the boys on her own.

“A surprise?” Under dark bangs, two pairs of almond-shaped eyes widened and glittered, Mark’s, deep blue like his father’s, and Michael’s, green. The boys were a handsome mix of their biracial Filipino American heritage.

“Since you’re the first passengers to board,” Madison explained, “the plane is still empty, so you won’t bother anyone. I’ve asked the captain’s permission to show you the cockpit.”

“Wow.” The boys echoed.

“Drop your backpacks onto your seats and follow me. You, too, Mr. Lambert, but you’ll have to stay outside. Only kids are allowed inside the cockpit.”

“Sorry, Daddy.” Mark giggled, not sorry at all.

Madison led them through the galley and knocked on the cockpit door.

The captain opened it. “Hello, there. Ms. Madison wants me to show you the cockpit. Usually no one is allowed in. I’ll make an exception for you. Cross your arms and keep them on your chest. You can look around for three minutes, but you have to stand against the door. I want to make sure you can’t touch anything.”

They immediately obeyed and listened to the captain’s explanations about the display, control, and communications equipment that crew members needed to operate the plane.

“That’s how we navigate the aircraft. Now, I count on you not to tell anyone on board that you received special treatmentand visited the cockpit.”

“Can we tell our friends after we leave the plane?” Mark asked.

“No problem.”

“Thank you so much, Captain.”

“Thank you, Captain,” Michael repeated.
